Photo Courtesy: Simon Watts (Swimming NZ).<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was one way traffic up front with Clareburt storming through his breaststroke leg in 1:11.35 \u2013 and splitting 28.84 for his final 50m in the freestyle to beat <strong>Luan Grobbelaar<\/strong> (Neptune Swim Club) 4;18.90 and his Capital Swim Club teenage club mate <strong>Sam Brown<\/strong> who was third in 4:24.55<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was a swim that even his coach <strong>Gary Hollywood<\/strong> wasn\u2019t expecting after his 4:16.86 morning heat swim with his astute coach thinking he would have to really improve in the middle of the race saying his heat swim was \u201cquite ordinary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBut he has the ability to bring out the big ones when he needs to,\u201d said Hollywood, who told his charge that it was a perfect opportunity to post a time that would put him into the top six in the world \u2013 traditionally where the medallists come from leading into an Olympic Games.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This performance certainly puts the improving Kiwi very much in the hunt for a medal in Tokyo.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Kiwis have not won an individual medal in the Olympic pool since Danyon Loader (Gold and silver) in Atlanta in 1996 in the 400 and 200m freestyle respectively \u2013 and never in the 400IM.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Here\u00a0\u00a0are the top 12 swimmers in history ranked ahead of Clareburt as he now prepares to bring home the Kiwis a rare medal from the pool.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>4:03.84 Michael Phelps (USA)<\/li>\n<li>4:05.18 Ryan Lochte (USA)<\/li>\n<li>4:05.90 Chase Kalisz (USA)<\/li>\n<li>4:06.05 Kosuke Hagino (JPN)<\/li>\n<li>4:06.09 Daiya Seto (JPN)<\/li>\n<li>4:06.16 Laszlo Cseh (HUN) 6:06.16<\/li>\n<li>4:06.96 Tyler Clary (USA)<\/li>\n<li>4:07.47 David Verraszto (HUN)<\/li>\n<li>4:08.86 Thiago Pereira (BRA)<\/li>\n<li>4:09.10 Wang Shun (CHN)<\/li>\n<li>4:09.22 Jay Litherland (USA)<\/li>\n<li>4:09.62 Max Litchfield (GBR)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Other winners on the night included:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Helen Glasson<\/strong> (Coast Swimming Club) \u2013 Women\u2019s 100m backstroke (1:00.81)<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Andrew Jeffcoat\u00a0<\/strong>(Pukekohe) Men\u2019s 100m backstroke (54.89)<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Georgina McCarthy<\/strong> (Hamilton Aquatics) \u2013 Women\u2019s 400IM (4:47.19 NZ 18 Years Record)<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>George Williams<\/strong>\u00a0(Coast Swimming Club) Men\u2019s 50m freestyle 22.99 and;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Laura Littlejohn<\/strong>\u00a0(St Pauls) Women\u2019s 50m freestyle 25.59<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clareburt is one of\u00a0 four NZ swimmers who had already made the qualification time for the <strong>2021 <\/strong>Olympics, and is one of three who are racing at\u00a0NZ Champs<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>along with\u00a0<strong>\u00a0Erika Fairweather\u00a0<\/strong>and <strong>Zac Reid<\/strong><strong>).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fourth,\u00a0<strong>Ali Galyer\u00a0<\/strong>(Coast)\u00a0\u00a0is currently in the US, so will not be present. Ali came back to New Zealand in 2019 for Opens and qualified for the\u00a018<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0FINA World Championships\u00a0along with<strong> Fairweather, Reid and Clareburt.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Galyer\u00a0and\u00a0Clareburt\u00a0met the\u00a0Olympic Qualification Time\u00a0at this competition and\u00a0Lewis\u00a0took home the\u00a0Bronze medal\u00a0in the\u00a0Men\u2019s 400m Individual Medley,\u00a0as well as breaking the\u00a0NZ Open record, which currently still stands\u00a0(4:12.07 seconds).<\/p>\n<p>Also at World Championships,\u00a0The women\u2019s 4x200m freestyle Relay made the top 12 required for relay quota at the 2021 Olympics. Our top female Freestyle swimmers will be battling it out to take the four spots of the relay team.<\/p>\n<p>Reid, in the\u00a0Tokyo leg of the 2019 FINA World Cup, took the\u00a0silver medal\u00a0in the\u00a0men\u2019s 400m freestyle.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Aquabladz\u00a0swimmer swam under the\u00a0Olympic Qualification Time\u00a0at the\u00a02020 ASA Open Championships\u00a0in December last year.
