TWENTY year-old Shayne Reese is a relative unknown, even in her native Australia. But that state of affairs may change quickly. Reese, who won the women's 100m freestyle at the Victorian Championships in a swift 56.60 two days ago, swam an even more impressive 2:00.62 to take the 200 meters today.

It was arguably the best swim of the meet, and it tags her as a young woman on the move in the world rankings. The time would have ranked her 23rd in the world in 2002. As it was, she was not among the world's top 50 (cut 2:05+).

Olympic silver medalist Matt Welsh, 26, also swam well, taking the men's 200m backstroke in two minutes flat — 2:00.00 — to complete a five gold medal performance that included a sweep of the dorsal events.

Welsh won four golds last summer during the Commonwealth Games in Manchester (50-100-200 back, 400 medley relay). He then went on to push American 200 back world record-holder Aaron Peirsol at the Pan Pac Championships a month later in Yokohama.

The 26-year-old Welsh holds Commonwealth records in the 50 and 200 backs (25.49, seventh performer all-time); and 1:57.59 (fifth all-time performer). In the 100 his pr/NR, 54.07 that won him a silver at the Sydney Olymp;ics, ranks him No. 2 on the all-time Commonwealth list — just off the record 53.98 by Canada's Mark Tewksbury from the Barcelona Olympics more than a decade ago.

Welsh ranked No. 2 globally last season to Peirsol in the 200 backstroke (1:57.68) and was fifth in the 100 (54.52). In their head-to-head battles at the Pan Pacs, Peirsol won both dorsal races (100, 54.22-54.31; 200, 1:56.88-1:57.68) and had a faster medley relay leadoff leg (54.17-54.29). His 100 pr is also slightly faster (54.01-54.07).

Welsh no doubt would love to return the favor this April in Indianapolis at the USA-Australia dual meet the first Sunday of the month, following the U.S. spring Nationals there. And it will likely take a royal decree by the Queen to keep Welsh off the Aussie team, which will be selected off the Aussie Nationals/ World Champiomships Trials meet, set to begin at the Sydney Olympic Aquatic Centre in 11 weeks.

Other outstanding swims were turned in by Rachel Coffee, 100m fly in 1:00.79; Brooke Hanson who won the 200m breaast in 2:32.90 after battling a game Sarah katsoulis (2:33.84) to complete her sweep of the breaststroke events; Nathan Crook, 50m breast in 29.24 (28.95p); and Jason Cohen, 200m fly in 2:02.44.

Event 60 Women Open 50 LC Metre
