The Wildcat contingent consisted of Shannon Hosack, Liesl Kolbisen, Denali Knapp and Lindsey Farella posted a time of 1:29.16, in setting a new Dorothy L. Sheppard Pool record. Hosack and Kolbisen swam the first two legs of the national champion relay in each of the last three years. Knapp wins her second national title swimming the third leg of the relay. SMU, the top qualifying team from prelims, was disqualified after a false start. <\/p>\n<p>Event 2 (500 freestyle relay &#8211; FINAL) Columbia sophomore Cristina Teuscher won her first national title in the 500 freestyle in grand fashion. Teuscher won in a time of 4:35.45 , the second-fastest American time, behind only Janet Evans&#8217; (Stanford) American record time of 4:34.39 set in the 1990 NCAA championship. 1997 champion Lindsay Benko of USC placed fifth (4:44.36). Not only is Teuscher the first woman national champion swimmer from Columbia, but she is also the first woman swimmer from an Ivy League school to win an NCAA title. <\/p>\n<p>Event 3 (200 individual medley &#8212; FINAL) The 1997 NCAA Swimmer of the Year Martina Moravcova (SMU) began her 1998 championships by defending her title in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:58.41. She also looks to defend titles in the 100 free, 200 free, 800 free relay and the 400 medley relay.
