Bobby Finke Rattles Own American Record With Yet Another 14:12 1650 Freestyle<\/strong><\/p>\n

Florida junior\u00a0Bobby Finke\u00a0<\/strong>completely dominated the 1650 freestyle field with a 14:12.52, the third fastest time in history as he missed his own American record of 14:12.08 from last year’s SEC meet before the pandemic cancelled NCAAs. Finke took it out more controlled compared to his own record pace, sitting about three seconds above record pace through the 800, as he turned it on over the back half but ran out of room as he started closing the gap tenth by tenth.<\/p>\n

Nonetheless, Finke won his second event of the weekend after the 400 IM last night<\/a> and won well ahead of 500 champ\u00a0Jake Magahey\u00a0<\/strong>of Georgia (14:28.69) and NC State’s\u00a0Ross Dant\u00a0<\/strong>(14:31.17) in second and third. Arizona senior\u00a0Brooks Fail\u00a0<\/strong>placed fourth from the earlier heats at 14:31.38 as he was the top senior in the field. Magahey added from his overall best time that had him 11th all-time entering the day.<\/p>\n

Texas outscored Cal in the team race here even though\u00a0Zach Yeadon<\/strong> of the Bears (14:36.06) placed sixth overall ahead of Texas’\u00a0David Johnston\u00a0<\/strong>(14:40.13) in seventh place.<\/p>\n

Notre Dame’s\u00a0Jack Hoagland<\/strong>, a former teammate of Yeadon’s in South Bend, placed fifth at 14:33.93 while Ohio State freshman\u00a0Charlie Clark\u00a0<\/strong>was eighth from the earlier heats at 14:40.70.<\/p>\n

This is Florida’s first ever NCAA title in the 1650 freestyle and the first for the SEC since Georgia’s\u00a0Matias Koski\u00a0<\/strong>won in 2015.<\/p>\n
