Louisville senior\u00a0Nick Albiero\u00a0<\/strong>used a stellar last turn to win the 200 butterfly on Saturday night at the NCAA swimming and diving championships in Greensboro with a 1:38.64, lowering his own best time by 0.01 to put himself fifth all-time in the event. Albiero was trailing Cal’s\u00a0Trenton Julian\u00a0<\/strong>for 175 yards before taking the lead on the final kick out.<\/p>\n

Julian finished in second for the Golden Bears with a 1:38.85 as he was quoted on the ESPN broadcast saying he wanted to win the 200 butterfly NCAA title for his father\u00a0Jeff Julian<\/strong><\/a>, who had a battle with cancer this year. Julian added from his best time that put him third all-time earlier this season.<\/p>\n

This is Nick Albiero’s second NCAA title of the weekend after winning the 200 medley relay last night for the Cardinals’ first ever relay national title in school history.<\/p>\n

It was a race that was heavily hyped coming into the meet with five of the nine fastest performers in history in one pool as Virginia Tech’s\u00a0Antani Ivanov\u00a0<\/strong>was third at 1:39.26, putting the Hokies 11th in the standings as they have never been higher than 18th.<\/p>\n

Georgia had two A-finalists in\u00a0Luca Urlando\u00a0<\/strong>(1:39.75) and\u00a0Camden Murphy\u00a0<\/strong>(1:39.99) in fourth and fifth as the Bulldogs are in line for their highest finish since getting third in 1997.<\/p>\n

Texas’\u00a0Sam Pomajevich\u00a0<\/strong>was sixth at 1:40.36 as the Longhorns hold a 15 point lead over Cal with diving playing in their favor.<\/p>\n

Indiana’s\u00a0Brendan Burns\u00a0<\/strong>(1:40.42) and Arizona’s\u00a0Brooks Fail\u00a0<\/strong>(1:41.82) also swam in the championship final.<\/p>\n

Louisville now has five NCAA titles in men’s swimming in individual events as Nick Albiero joins Carlos Almeida\u00a0<\/strong>(200 breast, 2012) and\u00a0Joao de Lucca\u00a0<\/strong>(100 free, 2014; 200 free, 2013 & 2014) as NCAA champs for the Cardinals in men’s swimming.<\/p>\n
