The 2021 NCAA Division I Men\u2019s Swimming and Diving Championship continued Friday with preliminaries on Day 3 of the meet.<\/p>\n

The events scheduled are the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 free, 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke.<\/p>\n

Cal has the lead heading into the day, but a late surge from Texas on Thursday night has the meet extremely close with every swim counting for both teams.<\/p>\n

NCAA Championships: 100 Backstroke<\/strong><\/p>\n

Cal\u2019s Ryan Murphy has the top spot in history at 43.39, the NCAA and American record set in 2016. NC State\u2019s Coleman Stewart is next at 43.62, followed by Harvard\u2019s Dean Farris (43.66) and Texas A&M\u2019s Shaine Casas, in 43.87. \u2026 Stanford has 13 titles in history, while USC and texas each have eight. \u2026 Murphy and USC\u2019s John Naber each claimed four titles in the event, while Peter Marshall, Yoshi Oyakawa and Jeff Rouse each claimed three.<\/em><\/p>\n

Texas A&M junior Shaine Casas<\/strong> continued his strong start to the NCAA Championships. After winning the first title in Aggies\u2019 history on Thursday in the 200 IM, he took the top seed in the 100 backstroke on Friday with a time of 44.41.<\/p>\n

Cal freshman Destin Lasc<\/strong>o has the second seed in 44.55, ahead of NC State sophomore Kacper Stokowski (<\/strong>44.70).<\/p>\n

Louisville senior Nicholas Albiero<\/strong>, in the middle of an impressive double, finished with the fourth seed in 44.85. He also took the fourth seed in the 100 butterfly earlier in the session, making the finals in both events.<\/p>\n

Indiana sophomore Brendan Burns<\/strong> took the fifth spot, followed by Javier Acevedo<\/strong>, a senior from Georgia, who touched the wall in 44.95.<\/p>\n

Texas senior Alvin Jiang<\/strong> took the seventh seed in 44.97, also in a double, after making the final in the 100 butterfly.<\/p>\n

Cal senior Bryce Mefford<\/strong> took the eighth spot in 45.04.<\/p>\n

Cal has two in the final sin the event with one for Texas as the teams battle for every point.<\/p>\n
