﻿{"id":466947,"date":"2021-03-26T08:17:28","date_gmt":"2021-03-26T15:17:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=466947"},"modified":"2021-03-26T08:17:28","modified_gmt":"2021-03-26T15:17:28","slug":"2021-ncaa-division-i-mens-championship-max-mchugh-top-seed-in-100-breaststroke","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/2021-ncaa-division-i-mens-championship-max-mchugh-top-seed-in-100-breaststroke\/","title":{"rendered":"2021 NCAA Division I Men&#8217;s Championship: Max McHugh Top Seed in 100 Breaststroke"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The 2021 NCAA Division I Men\u2019s Swimming and Diving Championship continued Friday with preliminaries on Day 3 of the meet.<\/p>\n<p>The events scheduled are the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 free, 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke.<\/p>\n<p>Cal has the lead heading into the day, but a late surge from Texas on Thursday night has the meet extremely close with every swim counting for both teams.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/swimmeetresults.tech\/NCAA-Division-I-Men-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Live Results<\/a><br \/>\n\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/watch\/player?id=b6b4ccf9-05fe-41ce-8728-fbd72e85017b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Live Stream<\/a><br \/>\n\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/meet\/2021-ncaa-division-i-mens-swimming-and-diving-championships\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Meet coverage<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>NCAA Championships: 100 Breast<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Indiana\u2019s Ian Finnerty is the only man under 50 seconds in the event, posting a 49.69 in 2018 \u2026 The next three on the all-time list are Florida\u2019s Caeleb Dressel (50.03), Arizona\u2019s Kevin Cordes (50.04) and Minnesota\u2019s Max McHugh (50.19) set at the Big Ten Championships this season. \u2026 Stanford has won 13 titles in the event with Texas claiming seven and Cal claiming six. \u2026 Texas\u2019 Brendan Hansen and SMU\u2019s Steve Lundquist and Cordes each won four titles.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Minnesota junior <strong>Max McHugh<\/strong> broke the pool record to take the top seed in the 100-yard breaststroke heading into tonight\u2019s final. McHugh touched the wall in 50.87 to claimthe top spot.<\/p>\n<p>He was the lone swimmer under 51 seconds during the prelims session.<\/p>\n<p>Virginia senior<strong> Keefer Barnum<\/strong> took the second seed in 51.09, finishing just ahead of Florida junior<strong> Dillon Hillis<\/strong> (51.27) and Cal junior <strong>Reece Whitley<\/strong> (51.38).<\/p>\n<p>Indiana junior <strong>Zane Backes<\/strong> took the fifth seed for finals in 51.53, finishing just ahead of Louisville senior <strong>Evgenii Somov<\/strong>, who touched in 51.58.<\/p>\n<p>Texas sophomore <strong>Caspar Corbeau<\/strong> took the seventh seed in 51.62, ahead of Pitt junior <strong>Cooper Van Der Laan<\/strong>, who touched in 51.73.<\/p>\n<p>It should be an extremely competitive final with several swimmers capable of claiming the title.
