The 2021 NCAA Division I Men\u2019s Swimming and Diving Championship continued Thursday with the first preliminary session of the meet from Greensboro, North Carolina.<\/p>\n

The events scheduled are the 500 freestyle, 200 IM and 50 freestyle.<\/p>\n

Texas took an early lead in the meet by winning the 800 freestyle relay on the first night and looks to build on it on Day 2.<\/p>\n

NCAA Championships: 500 Free<\/strong><\/p>\n

Florida\u2019s Kieran Smith<\/strong> has the all-time fastest swim in the event at 4:06.21, followed by Georgia\u2019s Jake Magahey<\/strong> (4:06.71). Texas\u2019 Drew Kibler<\/strong> has the fifth-fastest time in 4:08.25. The Longhorns have won this event since 2015 with Clark Smith<\/strong> winning in 2015 and 2017 and Townley Haas<\/strong> winning in 2016, 2018 and 2019. Those are the wins for Texas. USC has 14 titles in the event with Arizona and Michigan each tallying eight. Notre Dame’s Zachary Yeadon<\/strong> held the pool record at 4:10.30.
\n<\/em><\/p>\n

Georgia’s Jake Magahey<\/strong> broke the Greensboro pool record to take the top seed in what looks to be an incredible packed 500 free final. Magahey touched the wall in 4:09.36 to hold off the field.<\/p>\n

Arizona senior Brooks Fail<\/strong> was also under the pool record, originally set by Notre Dame\u2019s Zachary Yeadon<\/strong> (4:10.30) in 2020. Fail touched in 4:09.41 to take the second seed.<\/p>\n

American record-holder Kieran Smith<\/strong>, a junior from Florida, took the third seed in 4:11.03, ahead of Cal senior Sean<\/strong> Grieshop<\/strong> (4:11.12) and Texas junior Drew Kibler<\/strong> (4:11.52).<\/p>\n

Cal senior Trenton Julian<\/strong> took the sixth seed in 4:11.60, followed by NC State sophomore Ross Dant<\/strong> (4:12.34) and Florida junior Bobby Finke<\/strong> (4:12.37).<\/p>\n

It is set up to be a pretty exciting final packed with experienced swimmers who all have a shot to win. It should be a fun race to watch tonight.<\/p>\n
