Alexei Vlasenko,<\/strong> head of Russia\u2019s water polo, diving and synchronised swimming federations and a member of the Russian Olympic Committee<\/strong>‘s executive board, has been arrested over suspected fraud.<\/p>\n

Vlasenko, who is also chairman of the FINA diving technical committee and a member of the LEN bureau, faces 10 years in prison if found guilty of large-scale fraud.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe court granted the investigators\u2019 petition for a measure of restraint in the form of detention,\u201d Moscow\u2019s Basmanny Court<\/strong> said.<\/p>\n

\u201cVlasenko is under arrest until May 16.\u201d<\/p>\n

The arrest comes four months before the delayed Olympics<\/strong> in Tokyo<\/strong> are due to start on 23 July where athletes from Russia will compete under the acronym ROC without their flag and anthem as part of sanctions for several doping scandals.<\/p>\n
However, that followed the Court of Arbitration for Sport’s\u00a0<\/strong>decision to halve the four-year suspension<\/a> from major sporting events announced by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA)\u00a0<\/strong>in December 2019.<\/p>\n
