{"id":464797,"date":"2021-03-11T17:20:16","date_gmt":"2021-03-12T00:20:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=464797"},"modified":"2021-03-11T17:20:16","modified_gmt":"2021-03-12T00:20:16","slug":"william-mary-permanently-reinstates-swimming-other-teams-that-were-cut","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/william-mary-permanently-reinstates-swimming-other-teams-that-were-cut\/","title":{"rendered":"William &#038; Mary Permanently Reinstates Swimming, Other Teams That Were Cut"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>William &amp; Mary swimming and diving has been reinstated, along with the other sports initially cut by the school during the financial woes of the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>The women&#8217;s program was reinstated in October because of Title IX issues, but now the men&#8217;s program, along with several other sports, has been reinstated.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>William &amp; Mary President <strong>Katherine A. Rowe<\/strong> announced that the university&#8217;s financial review will not affect any teams&#8217; ability to compete:<\/div>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;We recognize that every sports program annually depends upon generous support from alumni and friends in order to thrive.\u00a0Moreover,\u00a0W&amp;M Athletics\u00a0as a whole depends\u00a0upon that generosity in order to avoid a moment in which sport sponsorship must be\u00a0reevaluated to ensure the department&#8217;s financial sustainability while advancing equity.<\/p>\n<p>In November, the university conveyed the expectation that men&#8217;s gymnastics, men&#8217;s swimming and men&#8217;s track &amp; field would continue at least through 2021-22. We are pleased to announce that these programs will continue to compete, without a\u00a0stated\u00a0potential end date, as do all other athletics programs at William &amp; Mary.\u00a0To be successful,\u00a0every\u00a0sport\u00a0at William &amp; Mary\u00a0will require sustained higher levels of philanthropic support going forward. &#8220;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div>\n<p>Interim Athletics Director <strong>Jeremy Martin<\/strong> thanked the community for their commitment to sustained success for W&amp;M Athletics and reiterated the need to maintain that momentum in the coming years.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This fall, the William &amp; Mary community reiterated the desire for a broad athletics program,&#8221; Martin said in a statement. &#8220;Thus far in FY2020, we&#8217;ve seen the financial commitment reflect that desire. However, the magnitude of the financial challenge is not diminished by success in a single year \u2013 it must be repeated and increased each and every year.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>Citing pressure over Title IX requirements and an internal review in the face of threatened litigation, William &amp; Mary decided <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/william-mary-to-cut-swimming-diving-after-2020-21-season\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">that axing seven sports on Sept. 3<\/a> was too heavy-handed. To preserve Title IX balance, designed to allocate equal athletic opportunities to men and women, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/citing-title-ix-pressure-william-mary-reinstates-womens-swimming\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">administration announced it would reinstate<\/a> women\u2019s swimming, women\u2019s volleyball and women\u2019s gymnastics.Now, all sports initially affected by the September decision are back.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>William &amp; Mary swimming and diving has been reinstated, along with the other sports initially cut by the school during the financial woes of the COVID-19 pandemic.
