2021 Big Ten Men\u2019s Swimming Championships<\/strong><\/p>\n

Day Four Heats, Columbus, Ohio<\/em><\/p>\n

The 2021 Big Ten men\u2019s swimming championships continued from the campus of The Ohio State University with the 100 back, 100 breast and 200 fly as this is the last of the five major power five conferences to hold their championship meet with 20 days until the NCAAs in Greensboro. Swimming World\u00a0<\/em>will be scoring the diving events that happened last week as if they are happening in real time.<\/p>\n

With platform diving included, Ohio State had the most A-Finalists advance with Indiana and Michigan close behind as it looks like it will come down to those three to determine who will be the Big Ten champion.<\/p>\n

Minnesota’s\u00a0Max McHugh\u00a0<\/strong>had the swim of the day with a 50.19 in the 100 breaststroke as today’s top eight was quicker than every NCAA final since 2015, which was 0.02 quicker on eighth place.<\/p>\n

There is also a heated battle for fourth between Purdue, Northwestern, Penn State and Wisconsin.<\/p>\n

Indiana got the day started with the top two seeds in the 100 backstroke, led by\u00a0Jacob Steele\u00a0<\/strong>(45.39) and\u00a0Gabriel Fantoni <\/strong>(45.57). The Hoosiers are in the thick of the team race currently with Michigan and Ohio State as Indiana last won three straight from 2017 – 2019 before Michigan won last year. The Wolverines put three in the A-Final as freshman\u00a0Wyatt Davis\u00a0<\/strong>is third at 46.17.<\/p>\n
Michigan’s\u00a0Eric Storms\u00a0<\/strong>(46.37) and\u00a0Nadav Aaronson <\/strong>(46.52) also put themselves in the A-Final to get the day started as the Wolverines have been impressive all week with their depth in the pool.<\/p>\n
Ohio State has one finalist for tonight in West Virginia transfer\u00a0Hunter Armstrong\u00a0<\/strong>(46.24) who had a strong heat swim out of lane 1. Penn State’s\u00a0Michael Daly<\/strong>, who won last night’s 400 IM, is seeded sixth at 46.47 while Wisconsin’s\u00a0Wesley Jekel\u00a0<\/strong>(46.57) is eighth.<\/p>\n

100 Breast<\/h3>\n
Minnesota’s\u00a0Max McHugh\u00a0<\/strong>threw down the nation’s top time in the 100 breaststroke on Friday at the Big Ten Men’s Swimming Championships in Columbus with a 50.19. After putting up some impressive splits<\/a> in the medley relay, McHugh had to wait around all week to get his hands on the individual event and he did so with relative ease as he improved on his season best of 50.5 that was already number one in the nation. McHugh is inching closer and closer to the American record of 49.69 set by Indiana’s\u00a0Ian Finnerty\u00a0<\/strong>from 2018.<\/p>\n

McHugh will not have a cake walk in tonight’s final though as all eight swimmers broke 52 seconds, including ninth place finisher\u00a0Mason Hunter\u00a0<\/strong>(51.93) of Michigan. Ohio State was the only school with more than one A-Finalist as\u00a0Jason Mathews\u00a0<\/strong>(51.30) and\u00a0Hudson McDaniel\u00a0<\/strong>(51.68) will be next to each other tonight in their home pool.<\/p>\n
Michigan’s\u00a0William Chan\u00a0<\/strong>(51.03) and Indiana’s\u00a0Zane Backes\u00a0<\/strong>(51.38) will also be next to each other as those two schools are vying for the team title.<\/p>\n
Northwestern’s\u00a0Kevin Houseman\u00a0<\/strong>(51.75), Iowa’s\u00a0William Myhre <\/strong>(51.81) and Purdue’s\u00a0Trent Pellini\u00a0<\/strong>(51.85) will also swim in tonight’s A-Final in what could be considered an NCAA preview. For reference, 51.85 is quicker than the eighth place prelims time at the last three NCAA meets, as it took a 51.93 to make the 2019 NCAA A-Final in the 100 breaststroke. The fastest field ever assembled was at the 2015 NCAAs when it took a 51.83 to make the A-Final.<\/p>\n
Michigan’s\u00a0AJ Bornstein\u00a0<\/strong>won a pivotal swim-off for 16th place over Indiana’s\u00a0Gary Kostbade\u00a0<\/strong>at 53.21 to Kostbade’s 53.22. Both guys were 53.41 in prelims.<\/p>\n
