BABY, it was cold outside. But inside, the waters of the Oklahoma City Community Coillege Natatorium were roiled to a boil as veteran Circle C Swimming Olympians Neil Walker and Nate Dusing plus hotshot age-grouper Caroline Bruce and — lest we forget — Masters queen Karlyn Pipes-Neilsen scored impressive victories on the first full night of competition at the Kerr-McGee Elite Pro-Am Invitational.

For pro swimmers like Dusing and Walker, prize money is $600 for first, $300 for second and $100 for third.
Dusing, American/NCAA record-holder in the 200 yard individual medley and a two-time NCAA team champ while at Texas in Y2K/Y2K+1, was also named Swimmer of the Championship last year. Tonight, he swam a very fast 200 free while Walker contributed a quick 100 fly to highlight the men's races.

Bruce is the 16-year-old sister of Stanford junior Michael, coincidentally also a breaststroker and last season's Pac-10 champ for the Cardinal. Caroline scored a strong double when she won the 100 breast in 1:01.24 after a pr 1:00.83 to lead all qualifiers; then came back to triumph in the 400 IM (4:19.39 with a pr 4:19.33 in the heats).

Dusing, who invariably swam the 100 fly on Day 2 of NCAAs and was thus precluded from going the 200 free (what with both falling on Day 2), splashed to a pr 1:33.76 double-century — ninth and sixth on the all-time performances'/perforemrs list. His old pr was a 1:34.97 from last March's American Short Course Championships in Austin.

To win, Dusing had to defeat two other old-timers who were his teammates on the US 2000 Olympic team: Scott Tucker (1:35.17) and Josh Davis, 30 (1:35.50).

Walker, American/NCAA record-holder in the 100 yard backstroke and a fine flyer too, won the 100 fly tonight in 46.27 with former Texas All-America Tommy Hannan a close second (46.41). Walker's winning swim was not far off his pr of 45.89 from the short-course championships, and that swim ranks him sixth all-time (performances) and fourth (performer). Hannan's swim was his pr, breaking his old record of 46.76 from NCAAs two seasons ago. He now moves into 10th on the performers' chart.

In the two other men's individual races, NOVA's Dave Denniston — a former Auburn All-America breaststroker whose previous 100 pr (52.62 from NCAAs in '01) is still the Tiger record — won in a career-best 52.60.
Denniston, who was hot on the World Cup circuit earlier this month, now moves into a tie with Ed Moses for fourth on the all-time performers' list, and tied for sixth in performances. Jeremy Linn remains the only breaststroker ever to have broken 52 seconds for 100 yards.

Former University of Tennessee/Southeastern Conference champ Jeremey McDonnell, who has a pr of 53.01, went 54.87 for second and third was Ponce deLeon Jr. (aka 36-year-old Dr. Ron Karnaugh) in a not too shabby 55.48. That time was just off his Masters record of 55.26 for the 35-39 age group.

former Mission Viejo and University of Arizona NCAA champ Chad Carvin, 1000 free champ opening night [Thursday], made it a pair of wins with his 3:49.42-3:49.96 400 IM victory over The Fleet's Joey Montague — a former Big 12 champ for Texas coach Eddie Reese. Karnaugh was third (3:59.20).

Reese's brother Randy is circle C coach and is among a select group of two — Auburn coach David Marsh is the other — to have won both women's and men's NCAA Division 1 Championships. He did it at Florida in the early '80s, taking the initial women's title in '82, then going back-to-back with men's titles the following two seasons.

Carvin's pr is 3:43.55 from the '95 NCAAs at Indianapolis, where he finished second to Michigan's recently retired Tom Dolan. Dolan set the current American/NCAA standard (3:38.18) in that race. Runner-up Montague's pr is 3:46.28 while Karnaugh's best is a 3:48.98 from this same meet four years ago when he was a mere lad of 32.
*     *     *     *     *
On the women's side, Circle C swimmers — primarily recent Texas gards — sparkled. Colleen Lanne, who won the NCAA 50-100 frees two seasons ago, won the 200 free tonight in 1:46.29, not too far off her pr of 1:44.93 that won the Big 12s a year ago. Second in a pr 1:47.05 was super prep backstroker Hayley McGregory, who won the U.S. Open 100 back just two weekends ago and is apparently trying to expand her repertoire. Circle C made it a sweep when 24-year-old Monica Williams took third in a pr 1:47.90.

Alexis Spann, 16-year-old daughter of Dr. Scott Spann, Reese's first NCAA champ 21 years ago (100 fly), was runner-up in the 100 breast (1:02.90). Spann senior was also an excellent breaststroker and 200 IMer too. He's now a leading orthopedic surgeon in Austin and a member of U.S. Swimming's Medical Committee.

In the 100 fly, Circle C swimmers swept the top two spots as Alison McLeod won in a pr 54.21 with Andrea Axtell next (54.49). Third was NOVA's Bethany Goodwin, a former UCLA All-America and World University Games gold medalist, in 54.51.

Forty year-old Karlyn Pipes-Neilsen made her presence known here. In the prelims of the 200 free, she lowered her own national Masters record in the Women's 40-44 age group with a 1:51.25. At night, she placed third in the B final with another Masters mark and a lifetime best 1:51.06.

Swimming at the end of prelims, the amazing Pipes-Neilsen clocked 4:28.82 for the 400 IM and 56.36 in the 100 fly, both Masters national records for women 40-44. The 100 fly time broke her own mark of 57.02 from Masters SC Nationals last May, and is also a lifetime best. In addition, it is faster than the national record of 56.44 in the 35-39 division.

KERR-MCGEE ELITE PRO-AM MEET
OKLAHOMA CITY COMMUNITY COLLEGE NATATORIUM
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK., DEC. 20, 2000
25 YD.
