2021 Big Ten Men\u2019s Swimming Championships<\/strong><\/p>\n

Day Three Finals, Columbus, Ohio<\/em><\/p>\n

The 2021 Big Ten men\u2019s swimming championships continued from the campus of The Ohio State University with the 100 fly, 400 IM and 200 free as this is the last of the five major power five conferences to hold their championship meet with 20 days until the NCAAs in Greensboro.\u00a0Swimming World\u00a0<\/em>will be scoring the diving events that happened last week as if they are happening in real time.<\/p>\n

Three different schools celebrated a win as Indiana, Penn State and Ohio State got to hear their fight songs at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.\u00a0Michael Daly’s\u00a0<\/strong>400 IM win was Penn State’s first in the men’s event in school history while\u00a0Paul DeLakis\u00a0<\/strong>of Ohio State got to celebrate his second title of the weekend in his home pool. Indiana’s\u00a0Tomer Frankel\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Brendan Burns\u00a0<\/strong>went 1-2 in the 100 butterfly as the Hoosiers and Wolverines look to be the teams to beat with two more days left of competition.<\/p>\n

100 Fly<\/h3>\n
Indiana had put up four in the A-Final of the 100 butterfly and came out on top in finals with a win as\u00a0Tomer Frankel<\/strong>, on his third race of the day, won the 100 butterfly with a 44.91. Frankel will be in the 200 freestyle later in the session as there is a 400 IM in between races for him to recover.<\/p>\n
After a lengthy review session, Indiana came out with a 1-2 finish as the Hoosiers’\u00a0Brendan Burns\u00a0<\/strong>was elevated to second place at 45.26. He originally touched the wall in third behind Michigan’s\u00a0River Wright<\/strong>, who was disqualified for surfacing after 15 meters on the start. Wright was Michigan’s lone finalist as the Hoosiers picked up huge points and surpassed the Wolverines in the team standings.<\/p>\n
Indiana’s\u00a0Van Mathias\u00a0<\/strong>(46.22) and\u00a0Cory Gambardella <\/strong>(46.75) finished in fourth and sixth as Indiana is looking to win the team title after winning three straight from 2017 – 2019.<\/p>\n
Wisconsin’s\u00a0Wesley Jekel\u00a0<\/strong>(45.96) and Purdue’s\u00a0Trent Pellini\u00a0<\/strong>(46.36) also improved on their seeds to finish third and fifth while Wisconsin’s\u00a0Erik Gessner\u00a0<\/strong>(46.79) finished in seventh to allow the Badgers to move past the Boilermakers for fourth.<\/p>\n

400 IM<\/h3>\n
It is not every year that Michigan is not celebrating a Big Ten title in the 400 IM as the last time that happened was 2013. Penn State heard its fight song for the first time at the 2021 Big Ten Men’s Swimming Championships in Columbus and also celebrated its first 400 IM Big Ten title and first individual win in four years as\u00a0Michael Daly\u00a0<\/strong>won the 400 IM from start to finish with a 3:41.09.<\/p>\n
Daly was hurting coming home as he held off a hard charging\u00a0Daniel Berlitz\u00a0<\/strong>of Michigan, who closed in a 24.58 to Daly’s 25.90, and ultimately finished in second at 3:41.45. The Wolverines did score big points in the 400 IM to snag the lead back from Indiana as\u00a0Jared Daigle\u00a0<\/strong>(3:43.24) was third and\u00a0Will Roberts\u00a0<\/strong>(3:49.28) was seventh for Michigan.<\/p>\n
Penn State also scored some big points to close the gap on Purdue as\u00a0William Lulek<\/strong> finished in fifth at 3:45.71 from lane eight.<\/p>\n
Northwestern’s\u00a0Jeffrey Durmer\u00a0<\/strong>(3:47.44) and Indiana’s Spencer Lehman <\/strong>(3:50.74) also swam in the championship final.<\/p>\n

200 Free<\/h3>\n
In a final that had half of the lanes filled by Wolverines, it was Ohio State’s\u00a0Paul DeLakis<\/strong>, who won his second Big Ten title of the weekend in his home pool with a 1:32.28 in the 200 freestyle. This is the second straight Big Ten title in the 200 free for the Buckeyes as DeLakis was Ohio State’s lone finalist in this event.<\/p>\n
DeLakis utilized a smart strategy, splitting 23’s the whole race to pull away from the field and win by nearly a full second over Michigan’s\u00a0Patrick Callan\u00a0<\/strong>(1:33.26), who added to his second place finish from the 500 last night. Callan looked to be within striking distance of DeLakis, but fell off on the last 25, just holding off Indiana’s\u00a0Tomer Frankel\u00a0<\/strong>(1:33.27) for second. Frankel had earlier won the 100 butterfly for the Hoosiers.<\/p>\n
The Wolverines did score a lot of points with\u00a0Jake Mitchell <\/strong>(1:33.56),\u00a0Gus Borges\u00a0<\/strong>(1:34.53) and\u00a0Wyatt Davis\u00a0<\/strong>(1:34.81) in the final as Borges had used his early speed to flip first at the 100 at 44.62, but could not hold on to that pace on the back half.<\/p>\n
Northwestern put two in the A-Final with\u00a0Connor Lamastra <\/strong>(1:36.35) and\u00a0Aleksa Bobar <\/strong>(1:36.44) in seventh and eighth as the Wildcats moved in to sixth place and challenged for a top four spot with Wisconsin and Purdue.<\/p>\n
