That status was confirmed on Thursday night when Manuel, the reigning co-Olympic champion in the event, won the 100 freestyle at the TYR Pro Series stop in San Antonio.<\/p>\n<p>Competing in her first meet in a year, due to the impact of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">COVID-19<\/a> pandemic, Manuel claimed a narrow victory in a tightly packed field when she recorded a time of 54.62. That time allowed Manuel to hold off <strong>Abbey Weitzeil<\/strong>, who came through with a mark of 54.68. The third spot went to <strong>Katie Ledecky<\/strong>, whose 54.74 revealed decent speed for the distance ace.<\/p>\n<p>After <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/for-simone-manuel-and-penny-oleksiak-a-shared-gold-and-intertwined-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sharing the gold medal<\/a> in the 100 freestyle at the Rio Games with Canadian <strong>Penny Oleksiak<\/strong>, Manuel captured back-to-back titles in the event at the World Championships in 2017 and 2019. Her performance from Thursday night might not have been speedy, but the opportunity to race against a quality field cannot be discounted as Manuel chases a fourth consecutive global championship.<\/p>\n<p>In the men\u2019s 100 freestyle, which figures to be one of the most hotly contested events at the U.S. Olympic Trials, <strong>Blake Pieroni<\/strong> came charging down the final lap and won in 49.19 to beat <strong>Zach Apple<\/strong> (49.49) and <strong>Maxime Rooney<\/strong> (49.51). Rooney had the fastest split over the last 50 meters, covering that length in 25.44.
