From senior Ryan Hoffer to freshman Destin Lasco, the Bears received contributions from throughout their lineup and looked every bit prepared to make a run at the NCAA title later this month. Southern California, Universit    414<\/pre>\n<h3>1650 Freestyle<\/h3>\n<p>Cal&#8217;s <strong>Zach Yeadon<\/strong>, a transfer from Notre Dame, claimed his first solo Pac-12 title when he set the meet record in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 14:33.69. That time was slightly quicker than the former record of 14:33.96, set in 2019 by <strong>Nick Norman<\/strong>. Yeadon pushed the pace from the start and registered a victory by more than 10 seconds over Arizona&#8217;s <strong>Brooks Fail<\/strong>, who went 14:44.43.<\/p>\n<p>The Stanford duo of <strong>Grant Shoults<\/strong> and <strong>True Sweetser<\/strong> placed third and fourth, with Cal&#8217;s <strong>Sean Grieshop<\/strong> and <strong>Tyler Kopp<\/strong> checking in at fifth and Backstroke<\/h3>\n<p>The way Cal has dominated the pool during the Pac-12 Championships, it was fitting to see the Bears put together a stellar exhibition in the 200 backstroke. Coach <strong>Dave Durden&#8217;s<\/strong> squad claimed the top-six places in the event, with freshman <strong>Destin Lasco<\/strong> leading the way in 1:38.13. The win gave Lasco a sweep of the backstroke events, with the 200 back yielding 95 points from the championship final.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Daniel Carr<\/strong> (1:38.81) and <strong>Hugo Gonzalez<\/strong> (1:39.18) placed second and third and also dipped under 1:40 while <strong>Bryce Mefford<\/strong> was fourth in 1:40.08. Hoffer recorded a winning time of 41.57, off a front-half split of 19.95, and won by nearly a second over Arizona&#8217;s <strong>Marin Ercegovic<\/strong>, who touched in 42.43. Based on his 41-mid clocking, Hoffer is on track to produce a sub-41 performance at the NCAA Championships.<\/p>\n<p>Stanford freshman <strong>Luke Maurer<\/strong> was third in 42.61, followed by Southern California&#8217;s <strong>Nikola Miljenic<\/strong> (42.84) and Stanford&#8217;s <strong>Mason Gonzalez<\/strong> (42.99). The Cal junior gave the Bears their latest triumph in a dominant showing at the Pac-12 Champs, as he posted a time of 1:48.86 in the 200 breaststroke. The time was a meet record and just off Whitley&#8217;s conference standard of 1:48.53, which was set in November of last year. Now, the countdown has begun until Whitley gets the chance to chase the NCAA\/American record of 1:47.91 later this month at the NCAA Championships.<\/p>\n<p>Whitley hit the midway mark in 52.36 and his final time was nearly four seconds under the automatic-qualifying time for NCAAs. Adding to his win in the 500 freestyle from earlier in the meet, Julian prevailed in the 200 fly in 1:38.53, good for a Pac-12 Conference record. Sancov finished second in 1:41.04 while Julian became the third-fastest performer in history.<\/p>\n<p>Julian split 46.77 at the 100-yard mark and dispatched the previous conference record of 1:38.83, set by Zheng Quah in 2017. After Carr led off in 43.01, Seeliger split 41.43 and was followed by Lasco in 42.53 and Hoffer in 41.69. The win was the 17th for the Bears in 18 events, only <strong>Alexei Sancov&#8217;s<\/strong> victory in the 200 freestyle preventing a sweep.<\/p>\n<p>Arizona was second in 2:51.10, a 42.49 leadoff by Marin Ercegovic the big boost for the Wildcats.
