{"id":464012,"date":"2021-03-03T11:14:14","date_gmt":"2021-03-03T18:14:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=464012"},"modified":"2024-10-28T10:57:24","modified_gmt":"2024-10-28T17:57:24","slug":"cornel-marculescu-long-time-fina-executive-director-steps-down","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/cornel-marculescu-long-time-fina-executive-director-steps-down\/","title":{"rendered":"Cornel Marculescu, Long-Time FINA Executive Director, Steps Down"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Cornel Marculescu<\/strong>, FINA\u2019s executive director for the last 35 years, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidethegames.biz\/index.php\/articles\/1104943\/fina-cornel-marculescu-off\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announced his resignation Wednesday<\/a> at the first FINA Bureau meeting of 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The resignation is effective immediately. <strong>Marcela Saxlund Medvedev,<\/strong> previously FINA\u2019s deputy executive director, has been nominated to fill Marculescu\u2019s role on an interim basis. <strong>Pedro Adrega<\/strong> has been elevated to Medvedev\u2019s assistant, having previously headed FINA\u2019s communications department.<\/p>\n<p>From FINA\u2019s official statement:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>The FINA Bureau members recognised the outstanding devotion and role of Mr Marculescu in the development of Aquatics in the five continents, contributing to make our Sport a pillar of the Olympic Movement.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Marculescu has been involved in aquatics since representing Romania in water polo at the 1964 Olympics. He also served as an official at the 1972 Games. Marculescu joined FINA in 1986 after serving as the Spanish Swimming Federation\u2019s technical director for a decade.<\/p>\n<p>His resignation is part of a shift at FINA that will come with the stepping down of President <strong>Julio Maglione<\/strong> in June after 13 years at the helm of the world\u2019s governing body.<\/p>\n<p>Marculescu hasn\u2019t been without controversy in his time. He\u2019s been criticized for what is perceived as a soft stance on doping, including on the <strong>Sun Yang<\/strong> controversy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/mack-horton-must-lose-his-medal-was-call-of-fina-bosses-after-podium-protest-against-sun-yang\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the resulting athlete protests<\/a> and on systemic doping <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/shocking-fina-executive-director-see-documentary-russia-doping-scandal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in places like Russia<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cornel Marculescu, FINA\u2019s executive director for the last 35 years, announced his resignation Wednesday at the first FINA Bureau meeting of 2021.
