ON the weekend of December 14th-15th at the Balfour Natatorium of Wheaton College in Norton, MA, more than 400 Masters swimmers throughout the region came together for the 2003 New England Short Course Meters Championship to race and have fun.

Sponsored by New England Masters (NEM), this year’s meet broke previous attendance records and was also the scene of some very fast swimming as six new USMS/FINA world records and 12 USMS national records were broken. Minuteman, tagged early as a threat to challenge GBM’s stranglehold on the title, couldn’t catch the indomitable team from New Hampshire’s Great Bay.

Minuteman did improve upon last year’s finish, vaulting ahead of Cambridge for second place. CMSC did slip one notch but still managed to set three new USMS national relay records and maintained its streak of three consecutive years of breaking at least one relay record at five consecutive NE Championship meets. More than 40 recognized NEM workout groups participated in this year’s contest.

Competition was especially intense between Granite State, SWIM RI and Andover and the ultimate finish decided by last few events of the final day. The final top ten standings:

1. Great Bay 5,708
2. Minuteman 4,903.50
3. Cape Cod Swim Club 285

FAST SWIMMING SPAN THE GENERATIONS

NEM has always had an exceptionally strong core of record holders and national champions between the ages of 45 and 55. The NEM zooming boomers were out in force this weekend.

Dan Rogacki (55-59) got things started in the first event when he recorded a 1:06.45 to break Bob Strand’s old standard of 1:07.15. Dan is swimming faster at 55 then 50 and is another case that makes one wonder at what age does the so-called “declining speed curve” apply to Masters. I

n the 50-54 category, two other NEM ageless wonders, Jacki Hirsty and Joel Feldmann battled it out in the 50 free. Jacki finished ahead of Joel by a fingernail with a 28.54 breaking Laura Val’s world record of 28.56. Joel finished right behind at 28.65 less than a tenth slower than the old world record. Jacki had the fastest women 50 free swim regardless of age.

Greg Shaw (50-54) is just getting back into Masters swimming after a 30+ year taper. Greg started breaking records last year and this year he’s getting even faster. Greg set new world records in the 50 fly (27.55) and 100 fly (1:01.47) and established a new national record in the 200 im (2:22.68)

Holding up the record banner for the younger generation was Jason Eaddy (25-29), the former Princeton standout who now trains at Harvard’s Blodgett Pool. Jason is carrying on the great NEM butterfly tradition as exemplified by Fred Schlicher (50-54) who also happens to train with Jason at Cambridge Masters. Jason set new world records in the 100 fly (54.83), 200 fly (2:03.59) and a new national record in the 50 fly (25.20).

While Jason dominated the fly swims he did have competition in the freestyle events in Stuart Cromarty (35-39) twelve years his senior. Jason and Stuart swam side-by-side in very closely contested races in the 200 and 400 frees that were not decided until the last turn. Jason “won” both races by a second (1:54.72 versus 1:55.50 and 4:06.73 versus 4:07.99) Both of Stuart’s swims were New England records.

The fastest heat of the 200 fly featured across-generation record attempts as Jason, Greg and Fred were all legitimate contenders to set new records. The crowd focused initially on Jason’s swim in Lane 4 as he gapped the field at the 100 but soon realized that Greg Shaw in Lane 1 was also out in world record pace. Greg finished with a 2:21.65 less than tenth off Boo Graner Gallas mark of 2:21.58. Meanwhile, over in Lane 7, Fred Schlicher nearly caught Greg at the end of the race with a 2:22.36. Next year, Fred joins the 55-59 age group and the smart money says he’s a good shot to break BOTH age group records then.

On the relay front, NEM broke four USMS national relay records:

Mixed 76-99 400 Free Relay 3:57.58
Cambridge B. championship. We’ve been receiving meet results from around the country thanks to the effort of different meet directors and the coordinated push by Mel Dyck. We will combine all of these results into one large meet file and score, down to the 16th place, each regional meet as members of one team (e.g. New England versus Pacific Masters). Any SCM meets held from October 1st through December 31, 2001 will be eligible. So far we’ve received results from:

Pacific Masters LMSC , Arizona State Championships, Indiana and Great Lakes Zones, Dixie Zones, Southern Masters LMSC, Southern Pacific Masters Zone and hope to receive results from the Pacific Northwest Zones and Colonies Zones. We expect to process the results next month. Prospects for New England victory look good since based on the information received to date we have at least 60% more splashes than the other meets.

By Bob Seltzer NORTON, MA., December 19.
