The 2021 Indiana Boys State Swimming and Diving Championship took place on Saturday, Feb. 27 at the IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind.<\/p>\n

Despite only winning one relay and one individual event, Carmel used their impressive depth to win their seventh-straight championship crown with 360 points ahead of Fishers (198.5) and Zionsville (189.5).<\/p>\n

The win set a new state record for most consecutive titles won and marks the 21st title in program history. The Greyhounds made it a sweep as the Carmel girls clinched their 35th-consecutive title<\/a> two weeks ago, and tonight’s victory is the school’s 158th IHSAA championship.<\/p>\n

Carmel also joined a pretty special relay club<\/a> on Saturday.<\/p>\n

Carmel began their winning ways as\u00a0Carter Lancaster\u00a0<\/strong>(22.90),\u00a0Ryan Malicki\u00a0<\/strong>(24.30),\u00a0Christopher Holmes\u00a0<\/strong>(21.70), and William Kok\u00a0<\/strong>(20.70) won the opening 4×50 medley relay in 1:29.60. Zionsville was second in 1:29.64 while Penn was third in 1:30.48.<\/p>\n

Hamilton Southeastern\u2019s\u00a0Keegan Streett<\/strong>, who placed second in the 200 free last season, found himself on top of the podium this year after clocking in at 1:36.72. Last year’s bronze medallist, Franklin Community\u2019s\u00a0McKillip<\/strong> Ratzlaff<\/strong>, took second in 1:37.20 while Carmel’s\u00a0Griffin Hadley\u00a0<\/strong>was third in 1:37.29.<\/p>\n

Zionsville’s\u00a0Will Modglin\u00a0<\/strong>won the 200 IM by well over a second, stopping the clock in 1:45.14 for his first-ever state title. After taking third in 2020, Franklin Community\u2019s\u00a0Cade Oliver\u00a0<\/strong>moved up one place to finish second in 1:46.48 and Carmel’s Gus Rothrock\u00a0<\/strong>rounded out the podium in 1:47.01.<\/p>\n

Delta\u2019s\u00a0Brady Samuels\u00a0<\/strong>blasted a time of 19.72 in the 50 free as the only swimmer in the field to crack the 20-second mark, just off the 19.59 he threw down during prelims. Boonville’s\u00a0Braden Rollins\u00a0<\/strong>(20.18) and Penn’s\u00a0Aaron Dies\u00a0<\/strong>(20.25) finished second and third, respectively.<\/p>\n

Sam Bennett <\/strong>of Delta dove to first on the 1-meter board for the second-straight year, finishing with a final score of 615.55 for the victory. Fisher\u2019s William Jansen <\/strong>placed second with 557.00 points while Danville\u2019s Holden Higbie <\/strong>took third with a total score of 534.00 points.<\/p>\n

Not too long after winning the 50 free, Samuels, who has committed to Purdue<\/a>, flew to the gold medal in the 100 fly after getting his hands to the wall in 47.05. Hoosier commit<\/a>\u00a0Finn Brooks\u00a0<\/strong>of Concordia Lutheran was second in 48.21 while third went to future Vol<\/a> Rothrock in 48.30.<\/p>\n

Center Grove’s\u00a0Ethan Martin\u00a0<\/strong>sprinted to the gold medal in the 100 free, posting a time of 44.02 for the win. Rollins, who signed his NLI with Alabama<\/a>, secured silver with a time of 44.39 as bronze was claimed by Georgia pledge<\/a> Streett in 44.68.<\/p>\n

Fisher’s\u00a0Jackson Carlile<\/strong>, who will stay in state and swim for Indiana<\/a>, cruised to first in the 500 free in a winning time of 4:22.31. It was a 1-2 punch for Fishers has NC State verbal commit<\/a> Kyle Ponsler\u00a0<\/strong>was right behind his teammate in 4:23.36 for the runner-up spot. Culver Academies’\u00a0Mitchell Schott\u00a0<\/strong>was third in 4:25.79.<\/p>\n

The Penn quartet of Joseph Radde<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>(20.89),\u00a0Dies (19.54),\u00a0Joel Cummins\u00a0<\/strong>(20.63), and\u00a0Connor Craig\u00a0<\/strong>(20.23) came out on top in the 4×50 free relay, combining in 1:21.29. They were just .08 off Carmel’s state record of 1:21.21 set in 2017. Carmel raced to second in 1:22.02 while third belonged to Fishers in 1:23.41.<\/p>\n

After winning the 200 IM earlier, Modglin captured his second state title, this time in the 100 back. The sophomore powered home in 46.60, over a full second ahead of runner-up and Mizzou-bound<\/a> Oliver’s time of 47.69. Carmel’s\u00a0Sean Sullivan\u00a0<\/strong>swam to third in 48.69.<\/p>\n

Notre Dame commit<\/a> Malicki, who swam the breaststroke leg on the winning 4×50 medley relay, raced to victory in the 100 breast after taking third the year prior. His time of 53.71 bested runner-up\u00a0Aiden Tierney <\/strong>(54.11) of Mt. Vernon Fortville and third-place finisher\u00a0Cameron Luarde<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>(55.08) of Homestead.<\/p>\n

Carmel’s seventh-straight title was capped off by a win in the final 4×100 free relay as Hadley (45.08),\u00a0Kayden Lancaster\u00a0<\/strong>(44.75), C. Lancaster (44.55), and Rothrock (44.32) joined forces in 2:58.70. Zionsville was third in 2:59.41 and 3:03.69 was fast enough for Franklin Community to snag third.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
