First it was Virginia Tech, which took the early initiative with <strong>Youssef Ramadan&#8217;s<\/strong> win in the 100 butterfly. After going 44.53 in the morning, he lowered his meet record to 44.32, in the process denying <strong>Nicolas Albiero<\/strong> of Louisville a repeat championships with a controlled swim from start to finish. He won the 500 free on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The big jump was <strong>Keith Myburgh<\/strong> of Virginia Tech, who gave the Hokies\u2019 title shot a boost by vaulting from sixth after prelims to second in 3:43.45, .01 ahead of NC State\u2019s <strong>Erge Gezmis<\/strong>. Swimming like someone who wants to win a team title, <strong>Philip Manoff<\/strong> of Virginia Tech was second din 1:32.63. ACC record outright in the evening.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s how <strong>Evgenii Somov<\/strong> does it on the way to a third straight 100 breaststroke title. Somov controlled the field the entire way on the way to a time of 51.03 seconds. That undercuts <strong>Brandon Fiala\u2019s<\/strong> conference record of 51.30 from 2017. Somov took down the meet record in the morning with his 51.36, striking <strong>Peter Kropp<\/strong> from the books.<\/p>\n<p>Second was not the Virginia swimmer you might have expected: While <strong>Joseph Barnum<\/strong> dropped from the second seed to fifth, <strong>Noah Nichols<\/strong> rose from the fifth seed to third in 51.36. <strong>Cooper van der Laan<\/strong> of Pitt was third in 51.52. Stokowski and top seed <strong>Nicolas Albiero<\/strong> closed hard, but it was NC State\u2019s Stokowski who got in first in 44.82 to Albiero\u2019s 44.85. That denied the Wolfpack a podium spot, having finished second. <strong>Kacper Stokowski<\/strong> was out in 44.51, faster than the time used to win the 100 back, but he was judged not to have broken the surface of the water with his head before the 15-yard mark. NC State coaches were shown on the ACC Network broadcast with pictures of the infraction trying to dispute it, but to no avail.<\/p>\n<p>It didn&#8217;t affect the winners Louisville, with <strong>Mitchell Whyte, Evgenii Somov, Nicolas Albiero<\/strong> and <strong>Abdelrahman Sameh<\/strong> taking charge to win in 3:02.91. They surged ahead on Albeiro&#8217;s leg and held off the pack.<\/p>\n<p>Second was Georgia Tech, while NC State&#8217;s DQ means Virginia Tech, entering as the fifth seed, ends up on the podium in third. All three are NCAA A cuts.<\/p>\n<p>Pitt was also disqualified for a 15-yard backstroke infraction, wiping out a 41.62 free split by <strong>Blaise Vera<\/strong> that would\u2019ve been the fastest in the race.<\/p>\n<p>The lack of points drops NC State to third.
