After action was complete at the Greensboro Aquatic Center, Virginia Tech was on top of the team standings (thanks to some diving help), with Louisville and N.C. Boston College                     98<\/pre>\n<h3>500 Freestyle<\/h3>\n<p>Notre Dame&#8217;s <strong>Jack Hoagland<\/strong> registered a mild upset in the 500 freestyle, as he covered the 20-lap event in 4:11.26 to beat North Carolina State&#8217;s <strong>Ross Dant<\/strong> (4:12.21) by nearly a second. Hoagland split 50.41 over the last 100 yards to reel in Dant, who was the top seed following prelims, and went 51.70 for his last 100.<\/p>\n<p>Hoagland put together a well-designed race, as he went out in 47.19 and followed with splits of 50.67, 51.41 and 51.58 for the middle three 100s. Pumputis trailed Virginia Tech&#8217;s <strong>Carles Coll Marti<\/strong> after the butterfly and backstroke legs, but the senior turned to his superb breaststroke leg to secure the lead and cement the outcome.<\/p>\n<p>Pumputis trailed Coll Marti\u00a0 by .40 at the midway point, but a breaststroke split of 28.90 (to the 30.22 of Coll Marti, changed the dynamic of the race and enabled Pumputis to take a nearly one-second lead into the freestyle leg. Pumputis also outsplit Coll Marti on the closing leg to improve on his second-place finish from last season.<\/p>\n<p>Louisville&#8217;s <strong>Evgenii Somov<\/strong> earned third place in 1:44.05 while Virginia&#8217;s <strong>Sean Conway<\/strong> was fourth in 1:44.11. After Thursday night, it can be said that Brownstead has delivered on his vast promise, as he won the 50 freestyle at the ACC Champs with the lone sub-19 clocking in the field. Brownstead got to the wall first in 18.88, a mark that was .20 off the meet record.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in the day, Brownstead lost his national high school record in the 50 freestyle to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/aiden-hayes-sets-pair-of-national-high-school-records-at-oklahoma-champs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Aiden Hayes<\/strong><\/a>, the Oklahoman who went 19.20 to break Brownstead&#8217;s 2020 mark of 19.24. The combination of <strong>Abdelrahman Sameh<\/strong> (19.15), <strong>Nicolas Albiero<\/strong> (19.06), <strong>Tanner Cummings<\/strong> (18.89) and <strong>Michael Eastman<\/strong> (18.89) produced a winning mark of 1:15.99, enough to hold off the North Carolina State effort of 1:16.33.<\/p>\n<p>The foursome that paced N.C. State to a runnerup finish featured <strong>Noah Henderson<\/strong>, <strong>Hunter Tapp<\/strong>, <strong>Giovanni Izzo<\/strong> and <strong>Kacper<\/strong> <strong>Stokowski<\/strong>, with Stokowski going 18.88 on his anchor leg.
