﻿{"id":462801,"date":"2021-02-23T00:30:34","date_gmt":"2021-02-23T07:30:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=462801"},"modified":"2021-02-22T18:04:43","modified_gmt":"2021-02-23T01:04:43","slug":"sean-balmer-on-virtual-meets-leadership-in-lockdown-and-tokyo-bound-luke-greenbank","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/sean-balmer-on-virtual-meets-leadership-in-lockdown-and-tokyo-bound-luke-greenbank\/","title":{"rendered":"Sean Balmer On Virtual Meets, Leadership In Lockdown And Tokyo-Bound Luke Greenbank"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Sean Balmer<\/strong> &#8211; former coach to world relay champion <strong>Luke Greenbank<\/strong> at <strong>Cockermouth Swimming Club<\/strong> &#8211; knows only too well the fragile state of swimming in Britain.<\/p>\n<p>England has been in a national lockdown since early January although prime minister <strong>Boris Johnson<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/swim-england-ceo-nickerson-has-mixed-emotions-after-pool-reopening-dates-are-announced\/\">announced on Monday<\/a> outdoor pools and lidos plus open water venues will be allowed to open from 29 March in the first wave of easing restrictions after schools resume on 8 March.<\/p>\n<p>Five weeks later, from 12 April, indoor pools can reopen for individual use or within household groups but over-18 club swimmers will have to wait until at least 17 May to train together once more.<\/p>\n<p>However, much irreversible damage has been done.<\/p>\n<p>Double Olympic silver medallist <strong>Duncan Scott<\/strong> posted on social media that <strong>Alloa Leisure Bowl<\/strong> \u2013 where he first began training under <strong>Steven Tigg<\/strong> \u2013 was to shut and asked people to sign a petition in an attempt to reverse the decision.<\/p>\n<p>That was in response to <strong>James Guy<\/strong> highlighting that <strong>Halifax Pool<\/strong> would not reopen once lockdown restrictions had been lifted, the four-time world champion saying: \u201cThis is what\u2019s happening to our future generation of athletes. Another pool closing. #KEEPPOOLSOPEN.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"oembed-wrap\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This is what\u2019s happening to our future generation of athletes! Nu Wave Swimming had to do short-course yards so we said just convert it.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Among the competition was a performance that stood out to Balmer in the women\u2019s 100 free.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201c54.8! Then we looked at the name, Alyssa Marsh. That\u2019s (Team Elite Aquatics head coach) Dave Marsh\u2019s daughter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt got me thinking: hold on a second, we could find the next Michael Phelps here.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo me and another coach and a web designer came up with the concept of VMeetSwim.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>VMeetSwim Offers Community, Rankings And Incentivisation<\/h3>\n<p>And so <strong>VMeetSwim<\/strong> \u2013 a platform for virtual competition at vmeetswim.com\u00a0&#8211; was born with the strapline:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cVirtually race, Virtually anyone, Virtually anywhere. I reckon no-one can do that.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So too is there a financial incentive for clubs and swimmers with the objective to return significant funds into the system.<\/p>\n<p>For Balmer, it\u2019s about thinking outside the box and something that can continue post-covid.<\/p>\n<p>He added:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt\u2019s trying to create a community as well: say there\u2019s a 15-year-old in America and they set a spectacular time and I\u2019ve got a kid and they\u2019re neck and neck. They can contact each other on Instagram, they can talk about it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can build education into it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor instance, Luke is an exceptional kicker: if Luke had been there at the time (we are doing this) a fellow coach would be like \u2018woah what are you doing?\u2019 and then you post video on the website.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlso, there\u2019s an obligation on coaches to share. There are organic improvements by all: the kids get better and their rivals have to.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>Hemmings&#8217; Leadership During Lockdown<\/h3>\n<p>He likened it to what he called \u201cthe (coach) <strong>Dave Hemmings<\/strong> approach of showing everybody what\u2019s he doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hemmings, who is based at the <strong>National Centre Loughborough<\/strong>, numbers <strong>Abbie Wood, Molly Renshaw, Siobhan O\u2019Connor<\/strong> and the <strong>Litchfield brothers, Max and Joe,<\/strong> among his charges.<\/p>\n<p>He has been proactive during lockdown posting skills and technique video on social media while encouraging his swimmers to record messages of encouragement for non-elite athletes.<\/p>\n<p>Balmer said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThat\u2019s leadership. We know they can get in the water, we know we can\u2019t get into the water but we still aspire to be them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe whole group were incredibly humble, incredibly empathetic to the situation, incredibly grateful for what they had because they are training, it was just a nice touch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ll lose coaches out of this as well. I know from my own coaches, a lot of them have gone into their shells.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we\u2019ve gone back, they\u2019ve all appeared back, we\u2019re flooded on poolside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the longer it goes on, the more difficult it is for people to come back, the more difficult it is for swimmers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSam Greenbank, national champion in 2019, would have had the chance of going to European juniors 2020.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s obviously not happened so the chance of going to European juniors 2021? If he\u2019d have had competition he would have been even better.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen he won his first senior nationals I said to him and Chris his dad: Luke might be the best backstroker this country has ever had and will still never make anything. I said that\u2019s the worry for me because he hasn\u2019t got competition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo this is driving that competition, the behaviours, the things that you want to see kids doing; kids getting up and going out for a run because I\u2019m only third on that grid and I know I can be top.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPractising things you want them to practise.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>Joy As Greenbank Heads To Tokyo<\/h3>\n<p>Greenbank was<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/peaty-scott-wilby-and-greenbank-confirmed-as-first-four-swimmers-on-team-gb-for-tokyo\/\"> one of four British swimmers pre-selected to Team GB for Tokyo<\/a> along with <strong>Adam Peaty, James Wilby<\/strong> and <strong>Duncan Scott<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Balmer said he was \u201cchuffed silly\u201d when he heard the news, saying: \u201cWhen he comes he just mixes in with everybody: he\u2019s just a normal kid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChats to the little uns, he just inspires them. He was a good lad but what made the difference with Luke was he didn\u2019t like getting beaten.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think he was second or even third at counties in the 100 back at 11.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI got loads of coaches texting me (when Luke was selected) saying\u2019 top job, coach\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI always talk massively highly of Luke on everything \u2013 he\u2019s a huge gentleman, he\u2019 do anything for anybody.
