This has been especially true for the men and women in the four sports we announced would be discontinued after this season,\u201d Athletics Director\u00a0<strong>Gary Barta\u00a0<\/strong>said in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hawkeyesports.com\/news\/2021\/02\/15\/university-of-iowa-reinstates-womens-swimming-diving-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">press release<\/a>. \u201cThe\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/university-of-iowa-womens-swimming-diving-team-issues-title-ix-complaint-over-termination\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">women\u2019s swimming lawsuit<\/a>\u00a0brought forward last September, combined with the recent court order mandating the continuation of the sport during the legal process, has created additional uncertainty that could last several months or even years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe made the decision the right thing to do was to re-instate the women\u2019s swimming and diving program and remove any uncertainty moving forward for our current student-athletes as well as high school swimmers considering attending the University of Iowa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The swimming and diving program was to be cut after this season, as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/university-of-iowa-to-cut-swimming-diving-after-2020-21-season-updated\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announced last summer<\/a>, causing outrage among the swimming community for cutting such a storied program \u2013 the birthplace of the butterfly stroke, and the original host of the 2021 NCAA men\u2019s swimming and diving championships before the meet had been moved to Greensboro. With the women\u2019s team returning, that leaves the relatively new natatorium with a home team for the future.
