{"id":462111,"date":"2021-02-13T21:23:24","date_gmt":"2021-02-14T04:23:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=462111"},"modified":"2021-02-13T21:23:24","modified_gmt":"2021-02-14T04:23:24","slug":"with-final-relay-win-ucla-women-beat-usc-for-first-time-since-2007","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/with-final-relay-win-ucla-women-beat-usc-for-first-time-since-2007\/","title":{"rendered":"With Final Relay Win, UCLA Women Beat USC for First Time Since 2007"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It took UCLA four-hundredths of a second to banish 14 years of history against its crosstown rival.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Claire Grover<\/strong> led UCLA\u2019s women\u2019s 400 freestyle relay to a victory in the concluding race of the two-day meet, edging USC\u2019s relay by .04 seconds to earn a 151-148 win over USC, the Bruins\u2019 first win over the Trojans since 2007.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/kaitlyn-dobler-throws-down-57-7-100-breast-in-uscs-meet-with-ucla\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Day 1 results<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Glover split 48.04 on the final leg for the 19th-ranked Bruins, as the team of <strong>Sophie Kosturos, Brooke Schaffer<\/strong> and <strong>Ella Kirschke<\/strong> clocked in at 3:15.80. Her previous best split was a 48.74.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Anicka Delgado<\/strong> split 48.42, which was almost enough to protect the lead handed of to her by <strong>Kaitlyn Dobler<\/strong> (48.29 split) on the final leg. <strong>Marta Ciesla<\/strong> and <strong>Isabelle Odgers<\/strong> kept USC within striking distance.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The defining factor, when it came down to it, was the amount of heart and belief on this team,&#8221; UCLA head coach <strong>Jordan Wolfrum<\/strong> said <a href=\"https:\/\/uclabruins.com\/news\/2021\/2\/13\/swimming-diving-no-19-ucla-notches-last-second-win-over-usc-151-148.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in a press release<\/a>. &#8220;The whole meet was back-and-forth with exceptionally fast racing on both sides of the pool, but there was an &#8216;it&#8217; factor with our team this weekend \u2013 the energy was exceptional, we were loud and proud \u2013 and it was the result of a really challenging year where they&#8217;ve all being grinding together. It was nice to see them have a little reward for the work they&#8217;ve put in this season.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>USC had the better of the races on the day. <strong>Jemma Schlicht<\/strong> and Ciesla went 1-2 in the 100 free, then <strong>Aela Janvier<\/strong> won the 200 backstroke and Odgers claimed the 200 breaststroke with <strong>Margaret Aroesty<\/strong> second. Odgers would also win the 200 IM.<\/p>\n<p>UCLA turned the tide with three of the top four spots in the 500 free, led by freshman <strong>Greta Fanta.<\/strong> Fellow rookie <strong>Sam Baron<\/strong> and <strong>Gabby Dang<\/strong> went 1-2 in the 100 butterfly, before Kirschke and <strong>Delaney Smith<\/strong> went 2-3 in the 200 IM to salvage points behind Odgers.<\/p>\n<p>USC\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/usctrojans.com\/news\/2021\/2\/13\/womens-swimming-diving-usc-downs-ucla-utah-to-wrap-regular-season.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">men\u2019s team<\/a> was on the right side of a 160-94 decision over Utah.<\/p>\n<p>USC swept the scored events Saturday, with <strong>Harry Homans<\/strong> winning the 200 back and 200 IM. <strong>Nikola Miljenic<\/strong> won the 100 free, <strong>Mario Koenigsperger<\/strong> claimed the 200 breast, and <strong>Dominic Margarino<\/strong> (500 free) and <strong>Alexei Sancov <\/strong>(100 fly) added victories. Miljenic, Sancov, <strong>Billy Cruz Zuniga<\/strong> and <strong>Max Saunders<\/strong> won the concluding 400 free relay in far less drama than the women\u2019s race supplied.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It took UCLA four-hundredths of a second to banish 14 years of history against its crosstown rival.
