{"id":461631,"date":"2021-02-08T13:39:14","date_gmt":"2021-02-08T20:39:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=461631"},"modified":"2021-02-08T13:39:14","modified_gmt":"2021-02-08T20:39:14","slug":"indiana-senior-croatian-olympic-hopeful-bruno-blaskovic-back-out-6-8-months","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/indiana-senior-croatian-olympic-hopeful-bruno-blaskovic-back-out-6-8-months\/","title":{"rendered":"Indiana Senior, Croatian Olympic Hopeful Bruno Blaskovic (Back) Out 6-8 Months"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Indiana Big Ten champion <strong>Bruno Blaskovic<\/strong> will miss six to eight months, including the Tokyo Olympics, due to a fractured vertebra.<\/p>\n<p>Blaskovic was diagnosed with a fracture in his L4 vertebra, a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.indystar.com\/story\/sports\/college\/indiana\/2021\/02\/08\/indiana-swim-team-loses-olympic-hopeful-bruno-blaskovic-injury\/4435122001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ccording to a report by the <\/a><em>Indianapolis Star.<\/em> He will need to wear a back brace for six to eight months.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m trying to keep the day busy so I don\u2019t think too much about it,\u201d Blaskovic told the <em>Star<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Blaskovic was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/2020-big-ten-mens-swimming-and-diving-championships-day-four-finals-live\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Big Ten Swimmer of the Meet in 2020<\/a> after winning the 50 freestyle in 18.97 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 41.88. He was also the runner-up in the 100 butterfly (45.44) and part of the winning 200 medley, 400 medley, 200 free and 400 free <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/2020-big-ten-mens-swimming-and-diving-championships-indiana-opens-with-123-200-medley-relay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">relays<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/results\/pdf\/2020-ncaa-division-i-mens-psych-sheet-ncaa-college-2020-03-25.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">He was seeded<\/a> third in the 50 free, third in the 100 free and 10th in the 100 fly at the 2020 NCAA Championships, which were cancelled by the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Blaskovic, 22, represented Croatia at the 2019 World Championships, finishing 27th in the 100 free and 33rd in the 50 free. He has Olympic B cuts in both events. His career-best times in both events \u2013 22.06 in the 50, 48.88 in the 100, <a href=\"https:\/\/iuhoosiers.com\/sports\/mens-swimming-and-diving\/roster\/bruno-blaskovic\/15118\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">per his bio on Indiana\u2019s website<\/a> \u2013 are just .05 and .31 seconds away from auto cuts, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>He last competed Jan. 16 in a tri-meet against Michigan and Northwestern, where he said he felt tightness in his back, but he couldn\u2019t identify a specific incident that led to the injury. IU coach <strong>Ray Looze<\/strong> suspected months of unsupervised workouts during lockdowns might have contributed.<\/p>\n<p>Blaskovic spent time in Brazil training with Indiana teammate<strong> Gabriel Fantoni<\/strong> during the COVID-19 before returning to his home country for lockdown.
