{"id":461629,"date":"2021-02-08T13:15:40","date_gmt":"2021-02-08T20:15:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=461629"},"modified":"2021-02-08T13:15:40","modified_gmt":"2021-02-08T20:15:40","slug":"battle-for-michigan-state-swimming-and-diving-adds-allies-for-board-meeting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/battle-for-michigan-state-swimming-and-diving-adds-allies-for-board-meeting\/","title":{"rendered":"Battle for Michigan State Swimming and Diving Adds Allies for Board Meeting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Battle for Michigan State Swimming and Diving <a href=\"https:\/\/battleforspartanswimanddive.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">campaign on Monday<\/a> announced two speakers who will represent it at Thursday\u2019s Board of Trustees meeting: Best-selling author <strong>Adam Grant<\/strong> and retired executive\/USA Swimming board member <strong>Kathy Fish.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>They join a lineup that includes Michigan State program alums <strong>Mike Darbee<\/strong> and <strong>Robbin Tenglin Makled.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Grant is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adamgrant.net\/about\/biography\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">author of four books<\/a>, including <em>Give and Take<\/em> (2013), <em>Originals<\/em> (2016) and <em>Think Again<\/em> (2021), plus a 2017 book co-authored by Facebook executive <strong>Sheryl Sandberg.<\/strong> He\u2019s a professor at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. A native of West Bloomfield, Michigan, Grant was an All-American diver in high school who worked with former Michigan State coach <strong>Eric Best.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Fish swam at Michigan State, where she graduated with a degree in chemical engineering in 1979. She swam at the NCAA championships in 1976 and 1977. In a long career, Fish was named Procter &amp; Gamble\u2019s chief technology officer in 2014, the first woman to hold the position. Fish was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/katie-meili-kathy-fish-elected-to-usa-swimming-board-of-directors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">elected to the USA Swimming Board of Directors in September<\/a> and has been involved in swimming for more than 50 years as a competitor, age-group coach, parent, swim club board president and fundraiser.<\/p>\n<p>Michigan State\u2019s men\u2019s and women\u2019s swimming and diving programs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/michigan-state-university-to-cut-swimming-diving-after-this-season\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">were cut in October<\/a> after 98 and 50 seasons, respectively, as varsity programs, effective at the end of the 2020-21 season. The alumni have since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/for-michigan-state-swimming-diving-alumni-the-fight-to-save-the-program-is-not-over\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rallied a robust effort to save the program<\/a>, which has included 11 female students <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/michigan-state-womens-swimmers-file-title-ix-lawsuit-against-university\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">filing suit alleging Title IX discrimination<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The move was painted then as strictly a budgetary issue, despite the teams\u2019 low cost of operation. But the university administration has held firm on that stance even as much of that budgetary pressure could have been relieved <a href=\"https:\/\/michiganstate.rivals.com\/news\/ishbia-s-32-million-gift-and-it-s-impact-on-football\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">by a $32 million gift by<\/a> former basketball player <strong>Mat Ishbia<\/strong> last week. That gift, however, is being funneled primarily into the basketball and football programs. Of the $8 million that is to be used at the discretion of athletic director <strong>Bill Beekman,<\/strong> none is earmarked for swimming and diving, which Beekman made clear last week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs Mat so eloquently said, part of his vision has been to affect all of our student-athletes, past, present and future,\u201d Beekman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/sports\/college\/michigan-state-university\/2021\/02\/05\/bill-beekman-decision-cut-michigan-states-swim-program-wont-change-after-32-m-gift\/4407450001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told The Detroit News<\/a>. \u201cSo for our swimming student-athletes that either are currently with us and decide to stay with us to finish their degrees, the Spartan For Life fund and program that we&#8217;re starting will obviously be of great benefit to all student-athletes, including our swimmers and divers.
