The state of emergency was set to expire on February 7 but is expected to be extended through March 7.<\/p>\n<p>Tokyo, the host of this summer&#8217;s Olympics in 172 days, confirmed 393 COVID-19 cases on February 1, down from 633 the day before, but the totals from January still double December&#8217;s totals.\u00a0Government officials have told Japanese news agency\u00a0<em>Kyodo News<\/em> that Tokyo is highly likely to stay under the state of emergency.<\/p>\n<p>For context, Japan as a nation reported 1,790 confirmed COVID-19 cases yesterday, compared to 5,730 in the U.S. state of Florida, which has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ioc-meets-with-florida-chief-financial-officer-about-olympic-proposal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">offered to take the Olympics<\/a> off of Japan&#8217;s hands.<\/p>\n<p>The restrictions in place require a citywide curfew is in place until 8 p.m., meaning all restaurants and pubs will close at that time, and will receive a fine if they disobey these restrictions.<\/p>\n<p>A recent\u00a0<em>Kyodo News<\/em> survey found around 80% of Japanese people want this year&#8217;s Olympic and Paralympics to be cancelled or postponed.<\/p>\n<p>IOC president\u00a0<strong>Thomas Bach<\/strong>\u00a0has full conviction in the Olympics taking place in Tokyo from July and insists there is no \u201cplan B\u201d leaving cancellation or going ahead as planned the only options.<\/p>\n<p>Speculation has mounted in recent weeks that the Games are under threat following the rise in coronavirus cases and the imposition of lockdowns and a state of emergency in Tokyo.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ioc-remains-committed-to-tokyo-2020-despite-state-of-emergency-issues-statement-on-vaccine\/\">The IOC responded to the latter by stating<\/a>\u00a0it had full confidence in the measures introduced by the Japanese authorities and that it was \u201cfully concentrated and committed to the safe and successful delivery of the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020 this summer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Japanese government and organizers of the upcoming scheduled Olympic Games have started weighing the option of holding an Olympics with no spectators on the assumption that Tokyo and the rest of the world may not successfully bring infections under control by July, officials said earlier this month, according to a story from Japanese agency\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/english.kyodonews.net\/news\/2021\/01\/731e700e9044-head-of-japans-olympic-organizing-body-says-no-spectators-an-option.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kyodo News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have been doing all kinds of simulations. Basically, I don\u2019t think (the games without fans) is something that would happen or something that I would like to do, but it won\u2019t be a simulation unless we think about it,\u201d\u00a0<strong>Yoshiro Mori<\/strong>\u00a0told reporters in Tokyo after holding a remote meeting with International Olympic Committee chief Thomas Bach.<\/p>\n<p>Mori and Japanese Prime Minister\u00a0<strong>Yoshihide Suga<\/strong>\u00a0have insisted that Japan will host a \u201csafe and secure\u201d Olympics in six months by implementing numerous anti-virus steps to protect the health of those involved, according to Kyodo.<\/p>\n<p>The government is considering three options for Tokyo 2021:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>not imposing a limit on spectators<\/li>\n<li>placing a ceiling of 50 percent of the venues\u2019 capacity<\/li>\n<li>holding events behind closed doors, according to the officials.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A decision on spectators is expected to come by the end of the spring.<\/p>\n<p>There have also been discussions among the Games organizers over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ioc-devising-athlete-protocols-for-arrival-at-tokyo-games\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">athlete protocols upon arriving in Tokyo<\/a>, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/tokyo-olympics-the-latest-on-athlete-vaccinations-and-what-experts-say-should-be-the-focus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">where
