{"id":461061,"date":"2021-02-02T06:32:11","date_gmt":"2021-02-02T13:32:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=461061"},"modified":"2021-02-03T12:09:33","modified_gmt":"2021-02-03T19:09:33","slug":"via-fundraising-goals-la-salle-offers-pathway-to-restore-mens-swimming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/via-fundraising-goals-la-salle-offers-pathway-to-restore-mens-swimming\/","title":{"rendered":"Via Fundraising Goals, La Salle Offers \u2018Pathway to Restore\u2019 Men\u2019s Swimming"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The La Salle men\u2019s swimming and diving team, which was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/la-salle-eliminates-mens-swimming-cut-programs-up-to-seven-this-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">slated to be discontinued at end of this academic year<\/a>, has been granted \u201ca pathway to restore\u201d the program, according to a letter to alumni.<\/p>\n<p>The letter, shared with <strong>Swimming World,<\/strong> cites a \u201cpositive and productive dialogue\u201d with La Salle president <strong>Colleen Hanycz,<\/strong> athletic director <strong>Brian Baptiste<\/strong> and Board of Trustees chair <strong>Bill Matthews.<\/strong> It lays out a plan for the reinstatement of the program contingent on short- and long-term fundraising objectives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe La Salle swimming &amp; diving community has shown great passion, pride, and a commitment to the men&#8217;s program,\u201d Baptiste said in the letter. \u201cThe willingness of the group to lead this effort shows a drive and determination to preserve the program. It may serve as an example for similar groups across the country, of the engagement needed to ensure sustainable, championship experiences for the sport of swimming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>La Salle men\u2019s swimming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/though-blindsided-by-cuts-la-salle-mens-swimming-fighting-hard-to-survive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">was cut in September<\/a>, one of seven programs cut by the school, citing budget concerns. Men\u2019s water polo was also cut, though women\u2019s swimming and diving was spared at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Given the financial challenges, La Salle sought to rally its swimming alumni base to raise funds to make the program sustainable. The alumni group is aiming to raise $300,000 to cover operating expenses through 2024 to provide the La Salle athletic department \u201cimmediate fiscal relief.\u201d The longer-term goal is to create a $2.3 million endowment to cover team operating costs in perpetuity.<\/p>\n<p>The alumni group has already raised $500,000 in pledges and hopes to secure the total amount by April 21, 2021.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have to give a lot of credit to Brian,\u201d said <strong>Greg Earhart,<\/strong> executive director of the College Swim Coaches Association of America (CSCAA). \u201cWhen faced with a difficult decision, we often see leaders make short-term cuts that have long-lasting impacts. Worse, many lack the humility to even consider solutions. Brian took the time to listen, asked difficult questions, and ultimately, see the opportunities instead of obstacles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFew programs get a second chance at life like this,\u201d former La Salle head coach and current executive director of Middle Atlantic Swimming <strong>Jamie Platt<\/strong> said. \u201cFewer still get the opportunity to control their destiny so it is important for us to deliver on this commitment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To make a pledge, visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.savelasalleswimminganddiving.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">www.savelasalleswimminganddiving.com<\/a>.
