{"id":460647,"date":"2021-01-27T08:10:40","date_gmt":"2021-01-27T15:10:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=460647"},"modified":"2021-01-27T08:15:46","modified_gmt":"2021-01-27T15:15:46","slug":"stanford-swimming-diving-cleared-to-compete-outside-of-santa-clara-county","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/stanford-swimming-diving-cleared-to-compete-outside-of-santa-clara-county\/","title":{"rendered":"Stanford Swimming &#038; Diving Cleared to Compete Outside of Santa Clara County"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>Stanford Swimming &amp; Diving Cleared to Compete Outside of Santa Clara County<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Santa Clara County in California lifted its regional stay at home order on Tuesday, allowing Stanford University teams to resume training and competition<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;On behalf of Stanford Athletics, I again want to express my gratitude to our Santa Clara County officials for the thoughtful decision-making process they have undertaken to protect our community throughout the coronavirus pandemic,&#8221; said\u00a0<strong>Bernard Muir<\/strong>, Stanford&#8217;s Director of Athletics in a press release. &#8220;We are thrilled that our student-athletes will now be able to train and compete on campus, and we will continue to follow rigorous health and safety standards as our teams embark on their upcoming seasons.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Stanford&#8217;s swimming and diving teams have returned to campus but have not had any meets outside of a dual meet with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ema-rajic-breaks-cal-record-in-100-breaststroke-in-non-scoring-dual-with-stanford\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">crosstown rival Cal Berkeley<\/a> in November. The Cardinal are the three-time defending national champions on the women&#8217;s side, although have lost a lot of key pieces due to the pandemic including <strong>Taylor Ruck<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Lucie\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Lillie Nordmann<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Regan Smith\u00a0<\/strong>as well as\u00a0<strong>Andrei Minakov\u00a0<\/strong>on the men&#8217;s side.<\/p>\n<p>The men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s swimming and diving teams have returned to campus and have begun modified outdoor training activities under the County&#8217;s previous guidelines, according to a press release from <a href=\"https:\/\/gostanford.com\/news\/2021\/1\/26\/athletics-updated-training-and-competition-plans-announced.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stanford Athletics<\/a>. Neither men&#8217;s or women&#8217;s teams have announced a schedule for the month of February.<\/p>\n<p>The Pac-12 has been the last power five conference to get a swimming and diving season off the ground, with Stanford and Cal not allowed to compete outside of their county. Arizona State <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/all-arizona-state-swimmers-to-redshirt-2020-21-season-bob-bowman-announces\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">has already redshirted its entire team<\/a>, and USC and UCLA just returned to competition this past weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Stanford made the announcement earlier this month that freshmen and sophomores would not be invited back to campus in the winter quarter due to the growing number of COVID-19 cases and lengthening public health restrictions that &#8220;are expected to significantly limit the in-person student experience on campus for much of the winter quarter.&#8221;
