However, many senior members of the International Olympic Committee, and various members of national Olympic Committees, squashed these rumors and insisted the Games were still on.<\/p>\n<p>With the Games still on, Swimming Canada and British Swimming made early selections for their Olympic Teams.<\/p>\n<p>Read below the five biggest stories in The Week That Was sponsored by\u00a0<a Ross<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Conflicting reports have surfaced over the status of the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo scheduled for this summer, after they were delayed a full year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/japan-looks-for-a-way-out-of-tokyo-olympics-because-of-virus-lf868xfnd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Times of London on Thursday produced a report<\/a>, citing a senior member of the Japan\u2019s ruling coalition that, \u201cThe Japanese government has privately concluded that the Tokyo Olympics will have to be cancelled because of the coronavirus.\u201d For stakeholders in Japan, the focus would shift to securing the next available Olympics, in 2032, as some compensation for the money spent on these Games.<\/p>\n<p>From the\u00a0<em>The Times\u2019\u00a0<\/em>report:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"responsiveweb__Paragraph-sc-1isfdlb-0 YieBL\"><em>The aim now is to find a face-saving way of announcing the cancellation that leaves open the possibility of Tokyo playing host at a later date. \u201cNo one wants to be the first to say so but the consensus is that it\u2019s too difficult,\u201d the un-named source said. \u201cPersonally, I don\u2019t think it\u2019s going to happen.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Earlier on Jan. 21, IOC President\u00a0<strong>Thomas Bach\u00a0<\/strong>insisted\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ioc-president-thomas-bach-no-plan-b-for-tokyo-full-confidence-in-olympics-going-ahead\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">there is no \u201cPlan B\u201d<\/a>\u00a0with full confidence the Games will go forward as scheduled despite huge cost overruns because of the delay.<\/p>\n<p>The Australian and United States Olympic Committee have published statements that refute these reports, indicating that any cancellation would come from the International Olympic Committee.<\/p>\n<p>The USOPC wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAny official communication on the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020 will come from the IOC, Tokyo Organizing Committee and the Japanese government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have not received any information suggesting the Games will not happen as planned, and our focus remains on the health and preparedness of Team USA athletes ahead of the Games this summer.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Australian Olympic Committee chef de mission for the 2021 Games\u00a0<strong>Ian Chesterman<\/strong>\u00a0also insisted the report was nothing more than a rumor when speaking on radio Friday in Australia,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.com.au\/sport\/olympics\/2021-tokyo-olympics-to-be-cancelled-report\/news-story\/725a3391ac734e8050054bf9886f198d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according to news.com.au<\/a>. It also provisionally named six swimmers to the Olympic squad.<\/p>\n<p>The six are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Kylie Masse,<\/strong>\u00a0100 and 200 backstroke<\/li>\n<li><strong>Maggie MacNeil,<\/strong>\u00a0100 butterfly<\/li>\n<li><strong>Penny Oleksiak,<\/strong>\u00a0200 freestyle<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sydney Pickrem,<\/strong>\u00a0200 breaststroke, 200 and 400 individual medley<\/li>\n<li><strong>Taylor Ruck,<\/strong>\u00a0100 freestyle<\/li>\n<li><strong>Markus Thormeyer,<\/strong>\u00a0200 backstroke<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Canadian Olympic Trials had been scheduled for April. They\u2019ll now take place May 24-28, still at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre. To accommodate social distancing, entries were limited to 20 swimmers per event (15 per Paralympic event),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/swimming-canada-releases-preliminary-top-30-lists-for-canadian-olympic-trials\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">invitations for which went out earlier this month.<\/a>\u00a0Swimming Canada, importantly, reserved the right to change its selection procedure as conditions require. Canada will send up to two representatives per event to the Tokyo Olympics, which this week have been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/japanese-government-ioc-and-ipc-insist-games-will-go-ahead-after-cancellation-claims\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">on increasingly rocky ground as to whether they can continue this summer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Rescheduled Trials will follow the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/swimming-canada-announces-shift-to-invitational-for-canadian-olympic-trials\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">same invitational-only format<\/a>, contested as timed finals. Swimming Canada also cites the ability for the men\u2019s 400 free and 800 free relays to post times to be considered for Tokyo qualification before the May 31 deadline set by FINA and the IOC. (Canada didn\u2019t field an 800 free squad in Rio.)<\/p>\n<p>The six swimmers were selected by Swimming Canada\u2019s Selection Committee, with a limit of one per event. The athletes provisionally selected are still expected to compete at Canadian Olympic Trials.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Adam Peaty, Duncan Scott, Luke Greenbank<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>James Wilby<\/strong>\u00a0have been confirmed as the first swimmers to be named to\u00a0<strong>Team GB<\/strong>\u00a0for the Tokyo Olympics.<\/p>\n<p>The quartet earned their place on the team following their medal-winning performances in individual events at the\u00a0<strong>2019 World Championships<\/strong>\u00a0in Gwangju with British Swimming revising its selection policy for the postponed Games.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/british-swimming-releases-selection-policy-for-tokyo-games-peaty-among-four-pre-selected\/\">While the four were nominated to the team in December<\/a>, Wednesday\u2019s announcement confirmed their selection to the Games which are scheduled for July and August although the rise in coronavirus cases around the world has once more cast doubt on them taking place.<\/p>\n<p>Pre-selection is the first of three qualification phases with further selections to be made following the British Championships which are scheduled for April and possible discretionary additions to be made in June 2021, making up the third and final phase.<\/p>\n<h3>The Week That Was #3: Jacco Verhaeren Joins German Swimming Federation<\/h3>\n<div Liz Byrnes<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Former Australia team coach\u00a0<strong>Jacco Verhaeren<\/strong>\u00a0has joined the German national team staff where he will share his sprinting expertise, the national swimming association DSV has announced.<\/p>\n<p>Verhaeren guided\u00a0<strong>Pieter van den Hoogenband, Inge de Bruijn<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Ranomi Kromowidjojo\u00a0<\/strong>to a total of 10 Olympic gold medals before heading to Australia where he was head coach.<\/p>\n<p>The 52-year-old left Swimming Australia in September 2020 after seven years following a tenure which saw them finish second in the medal table at Rio 2016 and the 2019 World Championships in Gwangju.<\/p>\n<p>Verhaeren has now joined the German coaching team although his focus will be on the long-term \u2013 including work with junior swimmers \u2013 rather than on preparation for the Olympics that are scheduled to take place in July this year.<\/p>\n<p>With a track record of producing freestyle swimmers who have reached the Olympic pinnacle over the shorter distances, Verhaeren will be tasked with developing sprinters from 50 to 200m in collaboration with coaches and sports scientists at the Bick<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/cscaa-head-calls-out-coaches-for-emphasizing-ncaa-championships-during-pandemic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>By Dan D&#8217;Addona<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After swimmers and divers missed out on the NCAA Championships last season because of the COVID-19 pandemic, College Swimming &amp; Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Executive Director\u00a0<strong>Greg Earhart<\/strong>\u00a0released a letter in the CSCAA newsletter, warning of the dangers of focusing on the NCAA Championships again.<\/p>\n<p>As of now, the NCAA championships are on as scheduled.<\/p>\n<p>Earhart\u2019s letter warns of the effects on swimmers whose hopes hinge on making the NCAA championships, a meet that because of the pandemic, has a chance of not happening again, especially with many college teams just starting to compete again.<\/p>\n<p>From the letter:<\/p>\n<p><em>What I do know is that the symptomatic spread of this virus is real and deadly. I\u2019ve never won a national title but I lost my mom to the coronavirus. I also know that I would feel guilty if I advocated bringing hundreds of people together just to crown a national champion knowing that it means another member of our community has to say goodbye to a loved one over an iPad.<\/em><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><em>At this point, I\u2019m convinced that this year\u2019s most important meet is Senior day.\u00a0 It might be at a conference meet, might be against your biggest rival or might even be virtual. Some kids might swim fast, others not at all. Closing the meet with the 200 breaststroke, one of the pet events of the man the meet is named after,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/league-of-olympic-swim-legends-kosuke-kitajima-tops-100m-breaststroke-podium-with-hencken-peaty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Kosuke Kitajima<\/strong><\/a>, Sato won ahead of\u00a0<strong>Yamato Fukasawa\u00a0<\/strong>at 2:09.94.<\/p>\n<p>Out in 1:01.18, Sato nearly split under 33 seconds for each 50, with a 32.5 and 33.0 on the second half of the race. He is now second all-time in Japan behind former world record holder and reigning Worlds bronze medalist\u00a0<strong>Ippei Watanabe\u00a0<\/strong>(2:06.67). This is an improvement from his previous best of 2:07.0 as Sato is quickly becoming one of the world\u2019s top breaststrokers in an already crowded event.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/is-207-the-new-standard-in-the-mens-200-breaststroke\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">All five men who have cracked 2:07 all-time in the 200 breast are still active<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Worlds silver medalist\u00a0<strong>Katsuhiro Matsumoto\u00a0<\/strong>impressed with a national record in the 200 freestyle with a 1:45.13, lowering his own record of 1:45.22 from the 2019 Worlds.<\/p>\n<p>Matsumoto won comfortably ahead of\u00a0<strong>Mano Hidenari\u00a0<\/strong>(1:48.97). Matsumoto is coming off the ISL where he had the fourth fastest time in the league in the 200 freestyle at 1:41.7 in short course meters.
