{"id":459932,"date":"2021-01-18T21:59:02","date_gmt":"2021-01-19T04:59:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=459932"},"modified":"2021-01-19T12:19:55","modified_gmt":"2021-01-19T19:19:55","slug":"klete-keller-apologizes-to-former-coaches-i-let-you-down","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/klete-keller-apologizes-to-former-coaches-i-let-you-down\/","title":{"rendered":"Klete Keller Apologizes to Coaches: &#8216;I Let You Down&#8217;, According to New York Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"app\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"NYTAppHideMasthead css-1q2w90k e1suatyy0\">\n<header class=\"css-1bymuyk e1suatyy1\">\n<section class=\"css-ui9rw0 e1suatyy2\">\n<div class=\"css-1f7ibof er09x8g0\">\n<p><strong>Klete Keller Apologizes to Former Coaches: &#8220;I Let You Down.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Klete Keller issued a tearful apology to former coaches about his role at the U.S. Capitol insurrection, according to the New York Times.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/header>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<section class=\"meteredContent css-1r7ky0e\">\n<div class=\"css-1fanzo5 StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">\u201cHe apologized to me,\u201d former USC and U.S. national team coach <strong>Mark Schubert<\/strong> told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/01\/18\/sports\/olympics\/klete-keller-capitol-riot.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>New York Times<\/em><\/a>. \u201cHe kept repeating, \u2018You\u2019ve done so much for me, and I let you down.\u2019 He kept saying over and over, \u2018I didn\u2019t mean for any of this to happen.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Keller has turned himself into authorities and is facing federal charges.<\/p>\n<p>He faces up to five years in prison, and a $250,000 fine, for his felony charge, and up to one year and six months for the two misdemeanors, respectively, in addition to another quarter million fine attached to each.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/klete-keller-faces-three-federal-charges-after-being-part-of-us-capitol-insurrection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">As previously reported<\/a>, an FBI agent wrote in a criminal complaint that he was able to identify the 6-foot-6 Keller, noting the Team USA jacket that Keller, a three-time Olympian, wore during the riot.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-1fanzo5 StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">Keller, through his attorney, declined to be interviewed by the New York Times. He has not spoken to any media since the incident.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">But he has spoken to coaches.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>Former Team USA coach <strong>John Urbanchek<\/strong> told the Times that Keller was emotional during their conversation.
