He was Singapore\u2019s chef de mission at the 2014 Youth Olympics and the 2018 Commonwealth Games and <a href=\"https:\/\/ussa.edu\/news\/academy-national-faculty-member-mark-chay-named-chair-of-singapore-olympic-athletes-commission\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">is the chairman<\/a> of the Singapore National Olympic Council Athlete\u2019s Commission.<\/p>\n<p>Chay\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/olympic-gold-medalist-joseph-schooling-starts-swim-school-in-singapore\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">work in sports<\/a> includes a stint as the communications manager of the Singapore Swimming Association, as the CEO of the Singapore Hockey Federation and as the CEO of the private International Sports Academy. He also spent seven years as the CEO of Coleman College, a K-12 institution.<\/p>\n<p>Mark Chay and the eight other NMPs were selected among 61 nominees by a special parliamentary committee and will be appointed by President <strong>Halimah Yacob <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/nine-new-nominated-mps-to-be-appointed-from-jan-21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">next week<\/a>. They serve 2.5-year terms. NMPs were created in 1990 to broaden representation in Parliament outside the strictly political sphere.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have a good slate of nine NMPs who have distinguished themselves through their contributions to society or in their respective fields, and whose specialised knowledge will add to the depth and breadth of the debates in Parliament,&#8221; Leader of the House <strong>Indranee Rajah<\/strong> said.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/mothership.sg\/2021\/01\/list-of-nmps-announced\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">other eight NMPs<\/a> are Professor <strong>Koh Lian Pin,<\/strong> 44; Professor <strong>Hoon Hian Teck,<\/strong> 61; National Trade Union Co-Operative vice president <strong>Abdul Samad Abdul Wahab,<\/strong> 48; security industry association head <strong>Raj Joshua Thomas,<\/strong> 41; <strong>Janet Ang,<\/strong> 61, chairman of the entertainment company Sistic; GuocoLand group (a property management company) managing director <strong>Cheng Hsing Yao,<\/strong> 49; dental surgeon and National Youth Council member <strong>Shahira Abdullah,<\/strong> 33; and Singapore Medical Association president <strong>Tan Yia Swam,<\/strong> 40.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mark Chay, who swam for Singapore at the 2000 and 2004 Olympics, is one of nine new Nominated Members of Parliament (NMP) in his home country.
