IT'Sa 'Dawgs' life, at least here in Athens.

Perhaps inspired by the performance of their football team, which pummeled Arkansas in the Southeastern Conference Championship game Saturday at Atlanta's Georgia Dome to win their first league title in 21 years, the 'Dawg women's and men's swim teams won their Bulldog Invitational for the first time since 1999 here this evening.

The dual victories at Gabrielson Natatorium marked the first time Georgia has swept its Invitational since 1999, the year the 'Dawgs won their first of three-consecutive NCAA Divison 1 women's Swimming and Diving Championships.

(Georgia has yet to win the NCAA men's swim title. SEC foes Florida, Tennessee and Florida all have won the championship, Florida and Auburn twice, so 'Dawg coach Jack Bauerle is anxious to get that ring.)

The Lady Bulldogs won their sixth-straight home invitational and, as noted, the Bulldog men finished in first place for the first time since 1999.

Gabrielson Natatorium was site of last March's men's NCAA Division 1 Championship, won by Texas for the third-consecutive season. The Lady Bulldogs posted 1166.5 total points, while the men finished with 1026 points, just 14.5 points ahead of second-place Florida State.

"This was our best night and our best day," said Georgia head coach Jack Bauerle. "It took us about a day and-a-half or two to wake up. We had some terrific swims tonight. I think the biggest plus from today was some of our second-line people came through with some swims that will help us at the conference and maybe the NCAA level.

"Having a meet that was not real big and having the opportunity to swim twice (prelims and finals), has definitely helped our team," offered Bauerle. "Those kids were the stars."

Froshwoman Laura Conway stamped her ticket to the 2003 NCAA Championships — the third weekend of next March at defending champ Auburn's home pool — as she won the 1650 yard freestyle with an NCAA automatic qualifying (and pr) 16:24.39. She led a 1-2-3 finish as Ali Williams took second in 16:49.80 and Rebecca Rose finished third in 16:55.52. Both the latter two swims were NCAA "B" cuts.

"We were not expecting Laura to go that fast at this meet, and she made NCAAs," Bauerle marveled. "That was our biggest surprise of the meet."

Although she's already in The Big Dance by virtue of her 22.34 national No. 1 in the 50 free from Friday night, Georgia's defending NCAA 100 free champ Maritza Correia lowered her seasonal-pr to 48.48 en route to victory over Florida State's Emma Dutton's 50.27.

Dutton had already racked up golds in the 200 IM (pr and FSU-record 2:01.71) and then followed suit in the 100 breast last evening with her second pr and Seminole record 1:01.92. To see her go a 50.2 in the 100 free must have been a very pleasant surprise for the FSU coaching staff.

"Ritzy" now ranks No. 2 nationally in the 100 to Cal's Natalie Coughlin's 48.02, done Saturday evening leading off the Golden Bears' 400 free relay at the Tiger Invite in Auburn. That swim came about 15 minutes after Coughlin had set an American/NCAA record in the 200 fly (1:51.91).

Paige Kearns finished third for UGA and five other Lady Bulldogs scored points in the consolation final.

Jordan Wallace added another 'Dawg victory as she won the 200 backstroke with an NCAA provo time of 2:00.23. Stephanie Buck took third and Katie Yevak was 10th to further up Georgia's point total. Runner-up to the winner was Seminole Andree-Anne Leroy, who was also second to Dutton in the 200 IM and collected gold in the 400 IM. Apparently the move from Pullman, WA., where she swam for Washington State last season, to Tallahassee is paying big dividends as she's recorded several prs in this meet.

Rookie Mary DeScenza, who last night set a Georgia record of 53.00 en route to winning the 100 fly, made it two-for-two in the 200. Mary D blistered the competition and cruised to victory in 1:57.13, more than four seconds faster than Georgia's Julie Hardt's runner-up 2:01.93. Descenza holds the 'Dawg record with her 1:56.27 in a dual meet against Cal five weeks ago here.

The Lady Bulldogs also claimed places four through seven.

Penn State's Courtney Stanchok, who was third in the 100 breast, moved to the top of the podium in the 200 with her seasonal and career pr of 2:14.33. Her old career-best was a 2:14.76 from the YMCA Nationals two summers ago, when she was competing for Bloomsburg.

Georgia's Virginia Pate and Lindsey Ertter finished 2-3, both recording "B" cuts, as did the winner.

Minnestoa's Rebecca Counthwaite won the platform diving competition with 363.55 points.

*    *     *     *     *

on the men's side, Georgia backstroker Peter Osborn led a 1-2-3 'Dawg sweep in the first event of the finals session, as the sophomore stopped the clock in 1:47.46 in the 200. Colin Underhill and Scott Lenyk finished second and third, respectively and Cole Taylor finished fifth. All those points were instrumental in the Dawgs holding off the 'Noles.

Osborn's been 1:44.81 at NCAAs here in March, his pr.

The 'Dawgs' NCAA 400 IM runner-up from last season, Robert Margalis, won his third race of the competition by sweeping to the mile title (15:25.04). Alabama freshman J.T. Jones was next (15:26.72). Fellow Bulldogs Taylor in third (15:36.89) and Matthew Owen in fifth (15:53.21) helped pad the 'Dawg advantage.

Georgia swept the top four places in the 200 butterfly, Randy Lam leading the way with a season-best 1:46.05. Margalis was right behind as he posted an NCAA "B" 1:46.39 to finish second. (Hey, Jack, give the kid some rest!) Andrew Mahaney and Adam Vicarro finished third and fourth, respectively.

Missing in action was Alabama's Ioan Gherghel, who won NCAAs last season for the Crimson Tide as a freshman.
'Bama coach Don Wagner has not indciated his Romanian star is not swimming this season but he wasn't present here.

Alabama freshman Vladimir Polyakov, who's been 2:15++ in the 200 breast long course last summer at the NCSA Junior Nationals in Florida, won the yards' version of the race here with his pr 1:59.54. FSU's Wickus Nienaber, a Namibian Olympian and 100 breast champ, was runner-up (1:59.77) and Georgia's Kyle Salyards stopped the clock in 1:59.84 to finish third.

Penn State's Eugene Botes, 100 fly champ winner, made it a pair of golds with his 44.59 – 44.96 100 free victory over FSU's Joey Marshburn.

The final 400 free relay saw Florida State's "A" and
"B" teams sweep the top two spots with the winning"A" tema clocking a fast 2:58.70.

All in all, it was indeed a '"'Dawgs' life."

The diving well saw the platform competition take place, and Bulldog Todd Avery finished second with 448.85 points. No Lady Bulldogs were in the event.

The invitational marked the conclusion of competition for Georgia for the calendar year. The team will take a break for final exams before heading south for winter training. The new year kicks off with the 2003 Georgia Diving Invitational which will take place in Gabrielsen Natatorium Jan. 3-5.

— Bill Bell

Final Women's Team Scores:
1.
