﻿{"id":459159,"date":"2021-01-08T17:10:27","date_gmt":"2021-01-09T00:10:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=459159"},"modified":"2021-01-08T18:03:49","modified_gmt":"2021-01-09T01:03:49","slug":"florida-state-womens-swim-tie-lsu-seminole-men-take-win","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/florida-state-womens-swim-tie-lsu-seminole-men-take-win\/","title":{"rendered":"Florida State Women&#8217;s Swim Tie LSU, Seminole Men Take Win"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The No. 22 Florida State women&#8217;s swim team (1-1-1, 0-1 ACC) tied the LSU Tigers 131-131 while the No. 16 Florida State men\u2019s swimming and diving team (3-0, 1-0 ACC) picked up its third win of the season on Friday, defeating RV LSU 170.5-91.5 at the Morcom Aquatics Center as both teams competed in swimming events only.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/results\/pdf\/2021-lsu-vs-florida-state-ncaa-college-2021-01-08.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Results<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Florida State Release<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cI thought we had a pretty good day,\u201d FSU head coach <a href=\"https:\/\/seminoles.com\/staff\/neal-studd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Neal Studd<\/strong><\/a> said. \u201cWe\u2019ve only been back in the water this week and I liked what I saw. We lost at LSU last year on the women\u2019s side, so for us to tie is a step in the right direction. We had some great swims from both teams and I am really proud of the effort.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The men\u2019s team set three Morcom Aquatics Center records in the win, as the team of freshman <strong>Mason Herbet<\/strong>, junior <strong>Izaak Bastian<\/strong>, sophomore <strong>Domen Demsar<\/strong> and sophomore <strong>Peter Varjasi<\/strong> started the meet off with a new record of 1:26.85 in the 200 medley relay. The Noles took down the mark of 1:27.30 set by Alabama on Jan. 12, 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Varjasi also set a new record in the 50 free at 19.76 and freshman <strong>David Quirie<\/strong> set the new standard in the 1650 free at 15:29.19. Varjasi erased <strong>Chad Mylin\u2019s<\/strong> 19.90 (Jan. 27, 2018) and Quirie took down Alabama\u2019s <strong>Nico Tome-Hernandez\u2019s<\/strong> mark of 15:38.90 (Jan. 12, 2020).<\/p>\n<p>Varjasi also won the 100 free (43.69) and was a part 200 free relay (1:19.76) team victory.<\/p>\n<p>The Seminoles won 10 of the 14 events against the Tigers, including a pair sweeps.<\/p>\n<p>FSU finished first and second in the 100 back behind Herbet (48.05) and senior <strong>Jackson Lucas<\/strong> (48.42).<\/p>\n<p>Lucas also led the one-two showing in the 200 back with a time of 1:47.54, followed by sophomore <strong>Nick Vance<\/strong> (1:49.16).<\/p>\n<p>Vance led from wire-to-wire in the 200 fly, touching at 1:46.64. He was also the runner-up in the 200 IM at 1:49.86.<\/p>\n<p>FSU swept the 50 free as sophomore <strong>Blake Moran<\/strong> (20.37) and junior <strong>Jakub Ksiazek<\/strong> (20.39) finished second and third behind Varjasi (19.76).<\/p>\n<p>Sophomore <strong>Adrian Aquilar<\/strong> picked up his first collegiate dual meet victory, winning the 500 free from lane one with a time of 4:31.79. Quirie followed in third place at 4:34.64 and freshman will Hoogenboom took fourth (4:37.05).<\/p>\n<p>The Seminoles put up a complete sweep of the 100 fly, as junior <strong>Max McCusker<\/strong> was the winner at 47.19, followed by freshman <strong>Rush Clark<\/strong> (48.70) in second, Herbet (48.76) in third and Demsar (48.82) in fourth.<\/p>\n<p>The Florida State women&#8217;s swim team jumped out to an early lead after finishing in first and second place in the 200 medley relay.<\/p>\n<p>The team of sophomore <strong>Tania Quaglieri<\/strong>, freshman <strong>Zsofia Kurdi<\/strong>, senior <strong>Elise Olsen<\/strong> and junior <strong>Kertu Alnek<\/strong> touched with a time of 1:40.09 ahead of senior <strong>Emma Terebo<\/strong>, junior <strong>Madison Blakesley<\/strong>, freshman <strong>Jenny Halden<\/strong> and senior <strong>Rebecca Moynihan<\/strong> at 1:40.69.<\/p>\n<p>Freshman <strong>Phoebe Griffiths<\/strong> (17:04.74), junior <strong>Maggie Emary<\/strong> (17:10.56) and junior <strong>Stephanie Holmes<\/strong> (17:11.72) placed second, third and fourth, respectively in the 1650 free.<\/p>\n<p>After LSU won the 200 free, the Seminoles answered with a one-two showing in the 100 back, led by junior <strong>Maddie McDonald<\/strong> in first (54.53) and Quaglieri (55.15) in second.<\/p>\n<p>The Tigers claimed the 100 breast and 200 fly, but FSU answered with another first and second place performance in the 50 free, as Moynihan touched first (23.14) and Terebo (23.24) second.<\/p>\n<p>Alnek (50.86), Moynihan (51.39) and Terebo (51.52) were second, third and fourth in the 100 free before McDonald won her second event of the meet, claiming the 200 back (1:58.09) ahead of freshman <strong>Pia Murray<\/strong> (1:59.22), who placed second.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaddie had a very nice meet,\u201d Studd said. \u201cShe had two really solid swims and a great anchor leg of the relay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Tigers picked up big points after sweeping the 200 breast, and 500 free, claiming the slight edge over the Noles 107-100.<\/p>\n<p>FSU pulled back ahead after Halden (54.50) and Olsen (54.59) posted another one-two finish.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElise has really stepped up,\u201d Studd added. \u201cAfter being injured, she\u2019s having a great comeback season.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, LSU answered with a one-two finish in the 200 IM, leaving the meet to be decided by the final 200 free relay.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe went for the win,\u201d Studd said. \u201cWe are deep in the 50 free and we switched a few things around in order to try and get the W.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>LSU led for the first two legs of the 200 free relay, but the team of Kurdi, Alnek, Halden and McDonald pulled out the win with a time of 1:31.36.<\/p>\n<p>The Tigers followed in second (1:32.04) and the team of freshman <strong>Gabrianna Banks<\/strong>, Olsen, Quaglieri and Moynihan took third, tying the meet.<\/p>\n<h3>LSU Release<\/h3>\n<p>A total of ten Tigers won events against the Seminoles on Friday. <strong>Katarina Milutinovich<\/strong> and <strong>Summer Stanfield<\/strong> each won two events for the Tigers. Milutinovich won the 100 and 200-Yard Freestyle with times of 49.45 and 1:47.27.
