THE Auburn women’s and men’s swimming teams completed their sweep of the Tiger Invitational this evening at the James E. Martin Aquatic center here, as the crowd saw an American, US Open and NCAA record fall for the second consecutive night.

Auburn's defending national champion women’s team scored 1,002 points while the six-time defending Southeastern Conference Champion men won with 1,252 points.

The crowd was again treated to a magnificent accomplishment as California’s Natalie Coughlin, who set the 200 freestyle record Friday night, destroyed the oldest American record on the books with a time of 1:51.91 in the women’s 200 butterfly. The mark bests Mary T. Meagher’s American and US Open record of 1:52.99 set April 8, 1981 by over a second.

Coughlin's splits:
cumulative:   24.96   52.88   1:21.66   1:51.91
by 50s:       24.96   27.92   28.78     30.25

"My coaches told me that I could break it tonight and they have yet to be wrong. Actually, they have been very accurate, even telling me what time I would go," Coughlin said. "To be honest, it hurt a lot to go all out like that, and I am even a little embarrassed about how I finished. But overall, I am very happy with the swim."

"This was an exceptional weekend for Natalie, especially for it being mid-season," Cal Coach Teri McKeever said. “She really put forth a gutsy performance, not just in breaking the records tonight and last night, but coming back fifteen minutes later tonight to lead off the (400 free) relay and going 48.02."

Coughlins's old fly pr was a 1:54.52 aganst USC in a dual-meet at the Trojans' McDonald's Olympic Pool last February, still No. 12 performance all-time — sixth-performer — and the fastest ever in a dual meet.

*   *   *    *    *

The final night started with Virginia’s Mirjana Boshevska clocking a 16:17.57 in the women’s 1650 freestyle to easily collect an NCAA automatic time. Magda Dyszkiewicz was the top finisher for the Tigers, going 16:42.47, good enough for fifth.

In the men’s mile, UVA again had the top finisher as Fran Crippen clocked a pr and and national No. 2) 14:57.58.

Prior to all the Coughlin-generated excitement, Auburn's Margaret Hoelzer got the action off on the right track as as she lowered her NCAA "A" cut in the 200 backstroke to 1:56.11 and won the race.

Her pr is a 1:54.54 from last season's NCAAs at Texas and that time ranks her 11th on the all-time perfomers' list. It's also No. 2 on the all-time Tiger list to teammate Kirsty Coventry's 1:54.37, also from NCAAs. She's ninth all-time (performers).

Coventry joined Hoelzer in collecting her third automatic cut of the meet with a second-place finish of 1:57.12. Rookie Erin Volcan placed third with a 1:58.01 while Jeri Moss was eighth (2:05.32).

Moss and Volcan are both rival Southern California prepsters, with Moss having attended high school in Riverside, CA. and Volcan — who represents Venezuela internationally — having gone to school in Orange County.

The men’s 200 backstroke saw Auburn's Bryce Hunt pick up the Tigers' first NCAA consideration time with a 1:45.87. It represents the first provisional time of the year for the Auburn record-holder (1:42.45 from NCAAs, No. 5 all-time on the Southeastern Conference performer list.)

Teammate Doug Van Wie was right behind in a 1:48.32 while George Bovell was fourth with a 1:48.53. Tigers Chad Barlow (1:49.21) and Eric Shanteau (1:50.79) were sixth and seventh, respectively.

"Bryce Hunt stepped up to a nice level today,” Marsh said. “He continues to improve in his training and he is starting to show a bright future."

*     *     *      *      *

Auburn sprinter Eileen Coparropa, double gold medalist at last month's Central American and Caribbean Games in the 50-100 frees for her native Panama, kept the automatic times coming as she brought home her second of the invitational.

The Panamanian speedster, who's a product of Fort Lauderdale Swim Team coach Duffy Dillon's program, won the century in 49.24 — not too far off her pr 48.81. Teammate Becky Short, who holds the Tiger 100 record with her 48.79, was next up for the Twith a provisional 50.65 to place fifth.

"Eileen has had a great month," Marsh said. "Coming off of her Central American Games records and to compete so well this meet is very nice to see."

Auburn’s Matt Kidd, who holds the Scottish record in the 100 meter freestyle and is an experienced international veteran, and Derek Gibb collected the Tigers’ first two consideration times in the 100 freestyle as they placed second (44.61) and fourth (44.71), respectively.

Ryan Wochomurka joined the duo in collecting a ‘B’ cut in winning the consolation finals in 44.49. Virginia’s Luke Anderson won the event in 43.82 and he's the Cav record-holder with his 43.08.

In the women’s 200 breaststroke Auburn's Laura Swander snatched her second provisional with a second place finish in 2:16.16. Lauren Duerk was next to the wall in 2:18.32 while Coventry was sixth (2:20.25).

Cal’s Staciana Stitts, a Sydney Olympian and former Pac-10 100 champ, won in an automatic 2:13.63.

"Overall I am real excited about the depth that we found this weekend," AU co-head women’s coach Kim Brackin said. "I liked that everyday there were different people stepping up and contributing. We didn’t need to rely on our ‘stars’ as everyone contributed."

The AU men were not done collecting provisional cuts as the 200 breaststroke rolled around. Mark Gangloff won in 1:59.48 while Justin Caron was next in 2:00.18. Eric Shanteau followed right behind him in 2:00.81.

"I feel real proud of how our breaststrokers composed themselves tonight," Marsh said. "To have three guys go under two minutes at this time of the year shows they can go even faster."

Auburn’s Hoelzer was the second-place finisher in the 200 fly after Coughlin’s feat with a 2:01.42. Her pr and school-record is 1:56.74 from NCAAs.

The final individual event of the invitational saw Michael Raab of Virginia pace the pack with a pr and national #2 1:44.18 in the men’s 200 fly. His old career best was a 1:44.72 from NCAAs and he's now No. 2 on the all-time Cavalier list behind former Canadian Olympian Shamek Pietucha's 1:43.50.

Jeremy Knowles was the top finisher for the Tigers, placing third (1:48.63) while James Galloway was seventh (1:51.06).

The closing 400 sprint relays saw the AU women’s foursome of Short, Coventry, Heather Kemp and Coparropa finish second (3:22.96) while the quartet of Feorge Bovell, Wochomurka, Gibb and Kidd won their side in 2:56.86.

*    *     *     *      *

The final diving session featured seven women’s divers and two men’s divers taking off from the platforms. On the men’s side, Matt Bricker recorded the top score with a 574.49 while Caesar Garcia was close behind at 569.77.

“Matt and Caesar both competed really well,” AU Head Diving Coach Jeff Shaffer said. “They are doing dives now that will potentially place them one-two at the conference meet and possibly at NCAAs if they make all their corrections and minimal mistakes.”

For the women, freshman Kelsey Patterson was the high scorer, racking up a 415.87. Teammate Ashley Rubenstein was two slots back in third with a 372.74 while Rachel Korth was fifth with a 345.82.

“Kelsey’s score is probably the highest female score at Auburn since Lizzy Flint,” Shaffer said. “If she keeps this up she will probably final at NCAAs which would be a huge contribution for the program.”

The divers’ tally for the meet included a personal best by each of the females on one board as Rubenstein and Korth did so on the one-meter and Patterson on the three.

“Overall we had an outstanding meet,” Shaffer said. “I couldn’t be more proud of the success we have had halfway through the season.”

"Overall we were treating this meet as a preparation for the NCAA meet," Marsh said. "Our performance from prelims to finals are important and I felt good about the meet as it progressed from day to day."

Auburn will have "home pool" avantage for SECs and NCAAs (women) and are regarded by most experts as the team to beat, especially after having taken Stanford to school at The Farm two weeks ago.

And there's no denying that the Tigers are loaded for bear.

But Cal,, with Coughlin, Stitts, freestyler Ashley Chandler, backstroker Helen Silver and sprinter Danielle Beck and strong relays, could be a Top 5 team when the splashing ends. Virginia's no slouch either. South Carolina lacks depth but sprinter Anna Nyira could score.

— Bill Bell

Final Women’s Scores
Auburn 1,002
California 744
Virginia 724
So.
