At a board of trustees meeting on Tuesday, there had been discussions about cutting sports, namely men\u2019s soccer, men\u2019s and women\u2019s swimming and diving and equestrian, according to a report from <em>The State <\/em>in Columbia, South Carolina. Caslen noted that cutting sports is not a preferred option, but could come into play.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we can preserve those teams, my desire is because of the goodness they provide our student athletes we would like to do that. There are unintended consequences like cutting pathways to professional or Olympic sports,\u201d Caslen said. \u201cI believe (not cutting is) the right thing to do. In the end, we may have to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The University of South Carolina opened the year facing a deficit of $40 million. With football attendance being one of its primary sources of funds, and with limited spectators in seats for each game this season, the budget has taken a hit, as it has in athletic departments all throughout the country.<\/p>\n<p>Eight Division I schools have cut swimming &amp; diving this off-season including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/east-carolina-university-cuts-mens-womens-swimming-and-diving\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">East Carolina<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/university-of-connecticut-proposing-to-cut-mens-swimming\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Connecticut<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/boise-state-university-to-cut-swimming-and-diving\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Boise State<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/dartmouth-cuts-mens-womens-swimming-programs-amid-covid-19-pandemic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dartmouth<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/university-of-iowa-to-cut-swimming-diving-after-2020-21-season-updated\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Iowa<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/goexplorers.com\/news\/2020\/9\/29\/general-an-open-letter-to-the-la-salle-and-explorer-athletics-community.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">William &amp; Mary<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/la-salle-eliminates-mens-swimming-cut-programs-up-to-seven-this-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">La Salle<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/michigan-state-university-to-cut-swimming-diving-after-this-season\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michigan State<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>William &amp; Mary has already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/william-mary-reverses-course-reinstates-all-7-varsity-programs-slated-to-be-cut\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reversed its decision<\/a> and will bring back swimming and diving, but Olympic sports have found themselves on the chopping block this offseason during one of the most difficult financial times. <em>60 Minutes<\/em> ran a profile piece on December 6 about the Olympic sports cut because of the pandemic&#8217;s financial issues it has caused. University of South Carolina president Caslen hoped that the suggested sports would not meet the same fate that other Division I schools decided.<\/p>\n<div class=\"oembed-wrap\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">85% of Team USA\u2019s 2016 Olympic medalists were college athletes, says Sarah Wilhelmi, who is in charge of college partnerships for the U.S. Olympic Committee. She\u2019s getting an education for her talents. She\u2019s doing this for the team, for the university and for the community. Why would we want to deprive her of that of the tremendous opportunity? That\u2019s true for any sport and any athlete out there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last season, the University of South Carolina qualified five women&#8217;s swimmers and two men&#8217;s swimmers to the NCAA championships before the meet was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Gamecocks are coached by\u00a0<strong>McGee Moody\u00a0<\/strong>and celebrated an SEC title last season from senior\u00a0<strong>Itay Goldfaden\u00a0<\/strong>in the 100 breaststroke. South Carolina also had three former swimmers compete in the International Swimming League this season in\u00a0<strong>Emma Barksdale<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong><a
