Competing at the Winter 18-and-Under Championships in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, Matheny clocked a time of 52.02. That outing came 24 hours after Matheny went 1:51.38 in the 200 breast to break <a href=\"https:\/\/calbears.com\/sports\/mens-swimming-and-diving\/roster\/reece-whitley\/16284\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Reece Whitley&#8217;s<\/strong><\/a> standard of 1:51.43.<\/p>\n<p>Although better known for his prowess in the 200 breaststroke, Matheny put his speed on display by nearly breaking the 52-second barrier. In his senior year of high school, Matheny is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-juniors-gold-medalist-josh-matheny-sends-huge-verbal-to-indiana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bound for Indiana University<\/a>, where he will mold his talents under <strong>Ray Looze<\/strong>. Matheny already carries international credentials, as he was the gold medalist at the World Junior Championships, where he also took home the silver medal in the 100 breaststroke.<\/p>\n<p>In women&#8217;s action, Georgia recruit <strong>Mia Abruzzo<\/strong> won the 400-yard individual medley in 4:10.27 and was also the victor in the 100 butterfly, where she stopped the clock in
