{"id":456850,"date":"2020-12-11T09:18:21","date_gmt":"2020-12-11T16:18:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=456850"},"modified":"2020-12-11T09:18:21","modified_gmt":"2020-12-11T16:18:21","slug":"michael-phelps-says-world-records-may-be-unlikely-at-tokyo-olympics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/michael-phelps-says-world-records-may-be-unlikely-at-tokyo-olympics\/","title":{"rendered":"Michael Phelps Says World Records May Be Unlikely at Tokyo Olympics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Michael Phelps<\/strong>, the owner of the most Olympic gold medals in history, stated in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/olympics-2021-phelps\/interview-olympics-phelps-says-world-records-unlikely-in-tokyo-idUSL1N2IQ2F0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recent interview with Reuters<\/a> that the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic means it is unlikely any swimming world records will fall during next summer&#8217;s postponed Olympic Games in Tokyo, believing that the swimmers were put at a disadvantage this year with the training limitations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-paragraph-2Bgue ArticleBody-para-TD_9x\">\u201cThere are kids out there who are controlling everything that they can control. They are swimming like they should be, they are lifting,\u201d said Phelps, who set 39 world records during his career.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-paragraph-2Bgue ArticleBody-para-TD_9x\">\u201cBut honestly, I think pushing it back by a year throws a bigger loop into it than everybody thinks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-paragraph-2Bgue ArticleBody-para-TD_9x\">\u201cThe best of the best will fight back and you\u2019re going to see some fast swims. But world records? I don\u2019t think so.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-paragraph-2Bgue ArticleBody-para-TD_9x\">\u201cWith all these pools being shut down, somebody would have to be damn near perfect for the rest of the preparation to have that chance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps this is Phelps&#8217; way of motivating his fellow peers in the sport that are training for Olympic success, as Phelps was notably one to take these comments personally to drive him to prove his doubters wrong. Phelps had long been known to listen to comments from rivals\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ian-thorpes-thoughts-on-michael-phelps-chances-at-spitz-record\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Ian Thorpe<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/olympics-swimming-milorad-cavic-tops-100-fly-semis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Milorad Cavic<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/chad-le-clos-flys-to-win-and-top-world-ranking-in-100-fly-finals-at-2015-fina-world-championships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Chad Le Clos<\/strong><\/a>, and use them to fuel himself in future racer, ultimately coming up successful each time.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/watch-all-nine-world-records-set-in-second-isl-season\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nine world records fell at the International Swimming League venue last month<\/a>, albeit in short course meters. Those records may be deemed &#8220;soft&#8221; by some swimming personalities who believe short course records are easier to break due to the lack of complete focus on that venue in a given year.<\/p>\n<p>Long course is a different animal, and many of the best swimmers at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/us-open-saturday-times-report-bacon-sullivan-wilson-attack-top-ten-world-rankings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">US Open<\/a> were off their in-season bests in late November perhaps due to the lack of aerobic training this year with such a long training gap.
