﻿{"id":456718,"date":"2020-12-10T05:16:07","date_gmt":"2020-12-10T12:16:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=456718"},"modified":"2020-12-18T19:00:49","modified_gmt":"2020-12-19T02:00:49","slug":"usopc-wont-sanction-athletes-for-social-justice-demonstrations-at-olympics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/usopc-wont-sanction-athletes-for-social-justice-demonstrations-at-olympics\/","title":{"rendered":"USOPC Won&#8217;t Sanction Athletes For Social Justice Demonstrations at Olympics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>USOPC Won&#8217;t Sanction Athletes For Social Justice Demonstrations at Olympics<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Team USA Council on Racial and Social Justice Thursday released recommendations related to Rule 50 of the Olympic Charter, requesting an end to prohibitions on peaceful demonstrations by athletes and team members at the Olympic and Paralympic Games.<\/p>\n<p>The decision has the backing of the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) and the Athletes Advisory Council (AAC). The USOPC furthered <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/race-and-ethnicity-mexico-racial-injustice-olympic-games-mexico-city-f607fb1049e75e8647296d0977851c70?utm_medium=AP_Sports&amp;utm_source=Twitter&amp;utm_campaign=SocialFlow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">its support but decreeing<\/a> that it, \u201cwill not sanction Team USA athletes for respectfully demonstrating in support of racial and social justice for all human beings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>From Thursday\u2019s press release:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>The Council\u2019s recommendation is built on the foundation that athletes should have the right to peacefully protest and demonstrate against racial and social injustices and to promote human dignity through global sport. It calls for the IOC and IPC to update guidelines to allow for peaceful actions that specifically advocate for human rights and racial and social justice, and distinguishes those acts from to-be-defined \u201cdivisive demonstrations\u201d \u2013 including, but not limited to, currently prohibited acts of hate speech, racist propaganda, political statements and discrimination.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/results\/team-usa-council-on-racial-and-social-justice-recommendations\/usa-senior-national\/2020\/December\/10?rtn=%2Fresults%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Read the full reccommendations here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Council on Racial and Social Justice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/anthony-ervin-three-para-swimmers-on-team-usa-council-on-racial-and-social-justice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">was formed this summer in response<\/a> to the killing of<strong> George Floyd<\/strong> in May and global protests against racial injustice. It contains a specific \u201cSteering Committee: Protests and Demonstrations\u201d that includes two athletes disciplined by the USOPC for demonstrations at the 2019 Pan Am Games, track and field athlete<strong> Gwen Berry<\/strong> and fencer <strong>Race Imbolden.<\/strong> Thursday\u2019s recommendations were crafted via input from athletes within and outside the AAC, national governing bodies, the USOPC and other thinkers and stake-holders throughout the athletics world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Team USA Council on Racial and Social Justice provided its recommendation to the USOPC, NGBs, IOC and IPC in an effort to show the power and duty athletes have to build a more inclusive world through sport,\u201d said <strong>Moushaumi Robinson,<\/strong> 2004 Olympic gold medalist in track and field, AAC leadership member and chair of the Council. \u201cThe Council believes the diversity of Team USA athletes is our strength, and that this recommendation can be a catalyst for change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robinson expanded on those thoughts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamusa.org\/News\/2020\/December\/10\/A-Letter-To-Team-USA-Athletes-From-Moushaumi-Robinson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in an open letter to athletes Thursday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The USOPC\u2019s decision to back the Council with a lack of punishments is a big step, particularly in the face of Rule 50\u2019s usual threat of banishment from competition and potential suspension.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe USOPC values the voices of Team USA athletes and believes that their right to advocate for racial and social justice, and be a positive force for change, absolutely aligns with the fundamental values of equality that define Team USA and the Olympic and Paralympic movements,\u201d said USOPC CEO <strong>Sarah Hirshland.<\/strong> \u201cWe thank the athlete-led Council for their thoughtful recommendations and look forward to continued collaboration on this important topic with the Council and the international community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stillmedab.olympic.org\/media\/Document%20Library\/OlympicOrg\/News\/2020\/01\/Rule-50-Guidelines-Tokyo-2020.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Olympic Charter Rule 50<\/a> cloaks itself as protecting \u201cthe neutrality of sport and the Olympic Games\u201d by forbidding protests or demonstrations during events, in the Olympic Village and all official ceremonies (opening, closing, medal, etc.). Among the banned protests are, \u201cDisplaying any political messaging, including signs or armbands\u201d; \u201cgestures of a political nature, like a hand gesture or kneeling;\u201d or \u201cRefusal to follow the Ceremonies protocol.\u201d In light of the recent surge in athlete activism, though, Rule 50 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/u-s-athletes-letter-on-ioc-rule-50-we-will-no-longer-be-silenced\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">effectively serves to silences athletes&#8217; chances to use the maximal exposure<\/a> of their platform to speak about issues larger than sport.<\/p>\n<p>For the Council, the steering committees are to be activated sequentially. With recommendations on Rule 50 propagated, it turns over to a committee on \u201cAthlete voice and advocacy,\u201d which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/anthony-ervin-on-olympic-rule-50-thats-not-going-to-fly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">includes swimmer<\/a> <strong>Anthony Ervin<\/strong> and para-swimmers <strong>Casandra Shaffer<\/strong> and <strong>Jamal Hill.<\/strong> The remit of that committee is to, \u201ccontinue identifying ways in which the voices of athletes can be amplified via the various platforms in the national and international Olympic and Paralympic movements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe that Team USA athletes, in line with athletes and teams in many other sports and leagues in the United States, can be a leading force for global good, and we are proud to advocate for the advancing opportunities and pathways for respectful athlete expression within our sports community,\u201d said USOPC President <strong>Susanne Lyons.<\/strong> \u201cSupporting this important work on behalf of Team USA athletes is a next step in our ongoing commitment to empowering the voice of athletes and living Olympic and Paralympic values.
