The meet is being swum at the official 2021\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/tokyo-2020-olympic-games-unveils-523m-swimming-diving-synchro-venue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Olympic Aquatic Center<\/a>\u00a0in its first taste of action 233 days ahead of the 400 IM heats at the Games.<\/p>\n<p>On Day 1 of the Japan Swim, a non-qualifying meet, Hagino won the men\u2019s 400 IM in 4:13.21, about three seconds off his time from two years ago.<\/p>\n<p>The final day of the Japan Swim wrapped up on Sunday with a stellar showdown in the men\u2019s 200 breaststroke, as\u00a0<strong>Ippei Watanabe<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Shoma Sato<\/strong>\u00a0both dipped under the 2:08 barrier. It seeks a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction against the cuts.<\/p>\n<p>The six plaintiffs are swimmers\u00a0<strong>Kelsey Drake, Sage Ohlensehlen, Christina Kaufman<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Alexa<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Puccini<\/strong>;\u00a0<strong>Abbie<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Lyman<\/strong>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kaaltv.com\/sports\/womenrsquos-wrestling-rugby-backers-join-iowa-gender-complaint\/5896647\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">who wrestled in high school<\/a>; and club rugby player\u00a0<strong>Miranda<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Vermeer<\/strong>. The four swimmers\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/university-of-iowa-womens-swimming-diving-team-issues-title-ix-complaint-over-termination\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">filed a Title IX complaint<\/a>\u00a0against the school in September.<\/p>\n<p>Thursday\u2019s filing seeks to maintain the status quo (i.e. an injunction against cutting women\u2019s swimming and diving), citing the University of Iowa cutting the program \u201cat a time during which the University is already out of compliance with Title IX.\u201d The suit also claims the urgency of the move, with 15 of the 35 women on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hawkeyesports.com\/sports\/wswim\/roster\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the swimming and diving roster<\/a>\u00a0having put their names into the NCAA Transfer Portal, including several of the plaintiffs (Among the swimmers, Drake and Ohlensehlen are seniors, Kaufman a sophomore, Puccini a freshman.) Murphy\u2019s edict calls for the suspension of youth, high school and adult recreation sports, and applies to games and practices.<\/p>\n<p>Because the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.njsiaa.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Jersey Sports Interscholastic Athletic Association<\/a>\u00a0(NJSIAA) previously delayed the start of winter high school sports until January, those sports will not be affected by Murphy\u2019s decision. However, club and YMCA programs will be expected to shut down for a month, leaving athletes without the opportunity to train.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs folks know, I am big sports fan and all of my kids play,\u201d Murphy said. \u201cI hope and intend to see the winter sports season in January. I want to see that high school senior get to play his or her last season and I value the importance of sports for the physical and mental well-being of our children.
