TWO World Cup records fell on the first night of competition of the Australian leg of the FINA World Cup tour.

Holland's Pieter van den Hoogenband, like others before him, was inside Alex Popov's world record pace at the halfway stage of the men's 100 meters freestyle final but was unable to match the Russian's blistering pace for the second half of the race. With his rival Ian Thorpe watching from the pool deck, Hoogie touched the wall in 47.20 seconds, less than half a second outside Popov's mark of 46.74 that has stood since 1994. Five swimmers swam under 49 seconds tonight.

Australia's Grant Hackett, another Thorpe rival, also gave the record books a scare when he won the 400m in 3:36.17, a second and a half off his own world record but five seconds in front second-placed American Chad Carvin, his training partner.

Thorpe, named on Wednesday as male "World Swimmer of the Year," decided to skip his usual events and restrict himself to the 50m free because he's still in heavy training, much to the disappointment of Van den Hoogenband and Hackett.

"I want to show my rivals that I'm working hard and I'm coming here to race hard and show how fast I'm swimming," Hackett said.

"I would have loved Ian to have been there. I'm sure it would have been a close race.

"I couldn't see him swimming any faster than 3:35 because he's in heavy work the same as I am so it would have been an interesting race."

Germany's Thomas Rupprath was another man clearly in a hurry, churning through the 50m backstroke in 23.49, just 0.26 outside the world record he set at the German National Championships earlier this week.

Sweden's Emma Ingelstrom set a World Cup mark of 1:05.55 in the 100m breaststroke, just off her own global standard of 1:05.38. Australia's Leisel Jones set a national record of 1:05.91 in finishing second.

British swimmers swam to three gold medals tonight. Former Florida State Seminole, Steve Parry, was an easy winner in the 200m fly in 1:53.71; 14 year-old Stephanie Proud won the 200m backstroke in a speedy 2:08.00; and 15 year-old Kerri-Anne Payne out-dueled the USA's Rachel Komisarz to take the 800m free in a fast 8:23.58.

In perhaps the most astonishing swim of the day, 12 year-old Zhang Tianyi of China won the women's 400m IM in a very quick 4:35.69.

Melbourne is the fourth leg of the World Cup. The meet finishes on Sunday.

2002-03 FINA WORLD CUP IV
Melbourne, Australia
December 6-8, 2002

25 meter pool

DAY ONE: December 6, 2002

RESULTS

Event 101, 400m Freestyle Men, Final

1.
