NATALIE Coughlin a distance freestyler?

You'd better believe it!

On opening night of the Tiger Invitational here this evening at the James E. Martin Aquatic Center, site of next March's NCAA Division 1 women's championships, the Divine Ms. C won the 500 free in her "maiden" attempt at this distance during her brilliant college career.

How'd she fare?

Oh, not too badly…just a pr and nation-leading 4:37.62, No. 1 by a cool two seconds-plus and the No. 5 perforance of all-time (fourth performer). Only Janet Evans, Cristina Teuscher and Tracy Caulkins have ever gone faster with Evans' American/NCAA record 4:34.39 from NCAAs at Texas her freshman year at Stanford No. 1.

Coughlin's time is also fastest in a non-championship meet (NCAAs, AAUs) although Evans went a 4:37.19 to set the current national high school record at the CIF meet in Belmont Plaza the spring following her three golds at the Seoul Olympics (1988).

Coughlin, just voted Swimming World's female "World Swimmer of the Year" for, among other things, her world-record in the 100 back last summer (first and only two sub-1:00.0 clockings.

And how interesting that at her first (and likely only) serious attempt at the distance, Coughlin should come within a couple of ticks of Evans' "unbeatable" record; as 23 years ago Caulkins, who would go on to win golds at the Los Angeles Olympics in both IMs, five years earlier went a then-record 4:36.25 to win the 500 at the final AAU Championships in East LA. (U.S. Swimming came into being a year later and has been swimming's governing body in the United States since.)

Coughlin is more noted for her collegiate backstroke-butterfly exploits, where she's double-defending NCAA champ/American record-holder in the 100-200 back and 100 fly. At last March's NCAA Championships she also led off Cal's 400 free relay and merely broke the hours-old 100 free record that had been set by Georgia's Maritza Correia in the race itself.

Auburn's Maggie Bowen finished second in a time of 4:47.79, the fastest time registered by a Tiger this season. Teammate Heather Kemp was third (4:48.04).

*   *    *    *    *

Auburn's women lead Cal, 310-208 points, with Virginia next (206) and South Carolina fourth (184)

On the men's side, the Tigers — six-time defending Southeastern Conference champions — lead Virginia by a 330-310 margin with South Carolina (190) third. (Cal's men's team is at Texas for the Longhorn Invitational, beginning tomorrow [Dec. 6]).

"I would consider this a successful first day of the meet," Marsh said. "I was really pleased with the adjustments we made from prelims to finals."

The meet began with the South Carolina's 200 freestyle relay team of Anna Nyiry, Heather Skaggs, Carolyn McHugh and Jennifer VanAssen clocking 1:30.76, an NCAA automatic qualifying time.

The men's 500 free was almost as impressive as Virginia freshman Fran Crippen (pr 4:18.54) and teammate Ian Prichard (4:18.56) each clocked NCAA auto times en route to a one-two finish.

In his collegiate debut, Crippen did it in style, clocking the nation's No. 2 time with Prtchard No. 3. Crippen is the younger brother of Sydney Olympian Maddie, an excellent medleyist-breaststroker, who's a senior at Villanova this season.

A junior, Prichard holds the Virginia and Atlantic Coast Conference record (4:16.32) from the conference championships in Charlottesville last year. Look for both him and Crippen to go faster by season's end.

Auburn's top finisher was BJ Jones, who placed third with a 4:23.43, besting his own team-season best time by over three seconds. Jeremy Knowles placed fifth for the Tigers (4:29.96) while James Galloway (4:30.65) finished sixth.

*    *    *    *    *

In the women's 200 IM, Aubburn's Bowen, double-defending NCAA champ/American record-holder, raced to a national #2 time of 1:58.12. She was followed by teammate Kirsty Coventry, who clocked 1:59.77. Both swims are NCAA automatic times cuts.

Coventry was Commonwealth Games 200 IM gold medalist last summer for her native Zimbabwe. Bowen was World Champion two summers ago in Fukuoka.

Tiger froshwoman Lauren Duerk also swam a fine race, taking fourth in a pr 2:03.00, making the NCAA "B" standard.

Auburn freshman George Bovell, a World Championship 200 IM finalist at Fukuoka following his junior year at The Bolles School, was top-finisher in the men's IM with a pr 1:47.68 — fourth-fastest nationally.

Look for Bovell — a native of Trinidad-Tobago — to take aim at the Tiger record of 1:44.97 by Scott Tucker from the '97 SECs before the season's done. Before Bovell's career's finished he may well take down the U.S. Open/NCAA reecord of 1:42.85 by former Texas star Nate Dusing from the '01 NCAAs at Collge Station; and the SEC record of 1:43.52 by Florida's Greg Burgess from the '93 NCAAs in Indianapolis. That latter time is history's second-fastest clocking.

Tigers Mark Gangloff (1:49.12) and James Galloway (1:49.30) joined Bovell in collecting NCAA provisional cuts, the first three for the Tigers in the event this year.

"George Bovell continues to demonstrate his talents for us," Marsh said. "Both of his swims were big contributors for us tonight."

The women's 50 freestyle saw AU's Eileen Coparropa — fresh off her Central American and Caribbean Games 50-100 free gold-medal performance last week in San Salvador — brought home the fastest time of the meet with her seasonal pr 22.60.

Her team also beat the NCAA auto cut, bringing yet another smile to co-coach Bracken's face. Her teammate, Becky Short, swam a 23.17 for third. Coparropa's pr is 22.30 and she'll be after the Tiger school-record of 22.18 later this season.

(The SEC record is also the American/NCAA standard, 21.69 by current Georgia senior Correia from last season's NCAAs at Texas.)

Closing out the individual events was the men's 50 freestyle, which went to Virginia junior Luke Anderson in 20.13. His pr is also the Cavalier school-record 19.68, and he's also the Virginia record-holder in the 100 free (43.08) with both swims having been done at last season's ACC Championships.

His 100 free pr, incidentally, is a mere .01 off former NorthCarolina State star David Fox's conference-record 43.07.

Derek Gibb (20.50 for third) was top finisher for Auburn while teammate Ryan Wochomurka (20.64) was sixth. A sophomore, his pr is a 19.69, done at last season's SECs while leading offthe Tiger 200 free relay.

*   *    *    *     *

Heading into the 400 medley relay, the Auburn women already held a substantial lead while the AU men clung to a 10-point advantage over Virginia. The women's team of Coventry, Laura Swander, Margaret Hoelzer and Coparropa wound up second to Cal (3:42.02 -3:39.22) with both making the "B" cut.

For the men, the squad of Bryce Hunt, Mark Gangloff, andy Haidinyak and Matthew Kidd clocked a provisional 3:15.46 to hold onto their advantage after the first night.

"Everyone contributed tonight," Brackin said. "We are starting to see people we will depend on for depth points coming alive, which is very exciting."

"I was particularly pleased with BJ's effort tonight," Marsh said. "His reputation as one of the hardest workers on this team is only being enhanced."

In men's one-meter diving , which Auburn was the only team competing, junior Caesar Garcia won with a personal best score of 335.39. Sophomore Matt Bricker also scored a personal-best 358.57 in the preliminary round and finished second.

On the women's side, where UCLA joined the Tigers, AU's Ashley Rubenstein scored a personal-best 468.16 in the finals in placing first. Teammate Kelsey Patterson placed fourth (454.72) while Rachel Korth was ninth (400.87).

The meet continues through Saturday.

— Bill Bell

Women's Team Scores
Auburn        310
California    208
Virginia      206
So.
