He will fulfill the remaining two-year term of a recently vacated director position.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCullen Jones is such a natural fit for the USA Swimming Foundation Board,\u201d USA Swimming Foundation Board of Directors Chair <strong>Dr. Cecil Gordon<\/strong> said. \u201cHe has long been one of the Foundation\u2019s most committed ambassadors and understands the critical role the Foundation plays in USA Swimming. His experience and vision for where the Foundation needs to go and how we improve our effectiveness will be valuable assets to our Board. We are all excited to have him join us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>USA Swimming President &amp; CEO <strong>Tim Hinchey<\/strong> added: \u201cIn getting to know Cullen over the years, I can state with confidence that his passion for supporting and delivering the important message about the lifesaving skill of swimming to communities across the country is extraordinary. He has held many volunteer roles within both USA Swimming and the USA Swimming Foundation, and we are thrilled to see him fill this newest position and continue to be a voice within the leadership of our sport.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since 2008, Jones has served as an ambassador for the Foundation, traveling the country to more than 50 Make a Splash Tour stops as an advocate for the importance of learning to swim \u2013 a cause near and dear to the two-time Olympian.<\/p>\n<p>Following a near-drowning accident at a water park when he was just five years old, Jones\u2019 parents promptly signed the young boy up for swim lessons and his love for the sport took off. He went on to become the first Black American athlete to set a world record \u2013 one that still stands today. At the 2008 Olympic Games, Jones swam on the world-record setting 4&#215;100-meter\u00a0freestyle relay team.<\/p>\n<p>At the 2012 Olympic Games, Jones won gold as Team USA\u2019s anchor in the 4&#215;100-meter medley relay, silver in the 4&#215;100-meter freestyle relay and individual silver in the 50-meter freestyle. Throughout his competitive career, he\u2019s won 13 U.S. medals (seven gold) at major international competitions.<\/p>\n<p>In 2007, Cullen Jones married his wife, <strong>Rupi<\/strong>, and she gave birth to their son, <strong>Avyn<\/strong>, in 2019. As a new father, Jones has committed to \u201cpracticing what he preaches\u201d and will enroll Avyn \u2013 who\u2019s already shown a love for the water \u2013 in swim lessons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI truly believe my life comes full circle,\u201d Cullen Jones said. \u201cI remember in 2008 after winning gold, I attended meetings with fellow Olympian <strong>Rowdy Gaine<\/strong>s, then president of the USA Swimming Foundation, the leadership of [longtime sponsor] Phillips 66 and my team as we developed a drowning awareness program with the mission to help all U.S. children learn the lifesaving skill of swimming. Eleven years, more than 1,500 local partners and nearly $8 million invested in learn-to-swim lessons later, we are still educating our country and combating the epidemic-levels of drowning. I consider it an honor and a privilege to serve on the USA Swimming Foundation Board to further our mission of saving lives and building champions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cullen Jones jokes that he\u2019s never really retired from swimming because of his commitment to the USA Swimming Foundation\u2019s philanthropic mission, but also working to ensure the sport becomes more reflective of the diversity in the United States. He\u2019s teamed up with other Black former and current USA Swimming National Team athletes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/cullen-jones-leading-swimmings-charge-for-safety-equality-in-and-out-of-the-water\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to form the Black Leadership in Aquatics Council<\/a> (also known as Team BLAC), whose mission is to be the aquatics leaders of the Black voice and to impact the sport of swimming through exposure, resources and mentorship.<\/p>\n<p>Jones has also recently been hired by Speedo as its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/cullen-jones-joins-speedo-north-american-team-as-philanthropic-sales-manager\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Philanthropic Sales Manager<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The USA Swimming Foundation announced today that four-time Olympic medalist Cullen Jones will join its Board of Directors, effective immediately.
