{"id":454774,"date":"2020-11-19T10:47:04","date_gmt":"2020-11-19T17:47:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=454774"},"modified":"2020-11-19T10:47:04","modified_gmt":"2020-11-19T17:47:04","slug":"psac-revises-cancellation-order-to-allow-swimming-championships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/psac-revises-cancellation-order-to-allow-swimming-championships\/","title":{"rendered":"PSAC Revises Cancellation Order to Allow Swimming Championships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last week, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) announced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/pennsylvania-state-athletic-conference-cancels-remaining-fall-sports-winter-decision-expected-soon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">it would cancel all winter sports in the league<\/a> due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Thursday, it reversed course somewhat, <a href=\"https:\/\/psacsports.org\/news\/2020\/7\/15\/general-psac-suspends-ncaa-competition-for-fall-2020.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">permitting league championships<\/a> in men\u2019s and women\u2019s swimming and men\u2019s and women\u2019s cross country.<\/p>\n<p>Last week\u2019s decision by the PSAC Board of Directors cancelled all \u201cmandated regular-season schedules and championship events\u201d for fall and winter sports. Fall sports <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/reports-pennsylvania-state-athletic-conference-suspends-sports-in-fall-semester\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">had been postponed through Jan. 1<\/a>, and winter sports were hanging in the balance. But with several schools vowing to push ahead with a season independent of the league, the PSAC left open the possibility of league championships if a critical mass of schools would attend, defined as six or more institutions. \u201cWe will remain supportive of any other decisions to play sports and host championship events should our membership view it as a safe and reasonable opportunity,\u201d PSAC commissioner <strong>Steve Murray<\/strong> said at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Six or more have responded for swimming and cross country, which the NCAA\u2019s COVID-19 Advisory Panel have designated as \u201clow-risk\u201d sports.<\/p>\n<p>The PSAC will finalize plans in the coming weeks, but anticipated championship dates would be in late March for cross country and late April for swimming. (That date would place it well <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncaa.org\/championships\/ncaa-championships-schedule\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">after the NCAA Division II championships<\/a>, which several of the PSAC schools would likely qualify for.) Presumably, the schools are free to schedule meets in the meantime beyond the conference\u2019s imprimatur, likely against local opposition.<\/p>\n<p>The PSAC Thursday also affirmed its commitment to \u201cpreviously intended regular-season and championship seasons for all spring sports in 2021.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last week, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) announced it would cancel all winter sports in the league due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
