Ed Accura<\/strong>, a co-founder of the Black Swimming Association (BSA)<\/strong>, has announced that the follow-up to ‘A Film Called Blacks Can’t Swim’ is set for global release in May 2021.<\/p>\n

‘Blacks Can’t Swim The Sequel’ is the second feature film produced by Accura and combines acting with real interview footage of 14-25 year olds from the Black community debating why many of their generation doesn’t swim.<\/p>\n

According to official figures released by Sport England<\/strong>, 95% of black adults and 80% of black children in England do not swim.<\/p>\n

The story follows Layla and K-Frost from a gritty south London council estate, who are part of a music and sports-based community programme designed to help give young adults from disadvantaged
\nbackgrounds a better chance in life.<\/p>\n

But, to complete this programme, they must learn to swim.<\/p>\n

Accura plays Frank who is acting as a mentor, drawing on his experiences and real-life issues with swimming.<\/p>\n

He faces a huge challenge in getting these two young adults to attempt to get into the water in the space of just two weeks, prompting the question why they refuse to swim in the first place.<\/p>\n

Accura believes that youth culture could be the answer to the long-term issue of the disproportionate number of Black people who do not swim.<\/p>\n

He said:<\/p>\n

\u201cAquaphobia still persists in many Black parents who didn\u2019t get the opportunity to learn the skill and who still believe it\u2019s safer to stay away from the water than to learn how to swim.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere comes a point where this generational cycle has to be broken and that time is now.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Accura is also co-founder of the BSA which was set up in March this year to champion inclusivity, representation and diversity in aquatics.<\/a><\/p>\n
It highlights the value of swimming as an essential life-saving skill and showcases aquatic opportunities and pathways which will otherwise be invisible to Black communities.<\/p>\n
Danielle Obe<\/strong>, interim CEO for the BSA, said:<\/p>\n
“\u201cBlacks Can\u2019t Swim The Sequel\u201d is an accurate representation of the barriers the Black community face when it comes to swimming, whether that stems from an inherited cultural belief, or simply not having the access, knowledge or confidence they need to get in the pool.<\/p>\n
“It\u2019s time we broke down those barriers, and the BSA is proud to be the first organisation of its kind to tackle this issue head on.<\/p>\n
\u201cWith support from the aquatic governing bodies, we can diversify the sport that saves lives and make positive change.<\/p>\n
“This includes more representation for Black people at all levels in the sport, from the board room to the swimming pool, and making water safety, life-saving and drowning prevention skills accessible for Black communities everywhere.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
