Photo Courtesy: Action Woman Twitter<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Significantly increasing the number of female coaches available for Paris 2024 is the first target of this long-term plan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Marshall is perfectly-placed to pass on her wisdom having guided Peaty to Olympic, world, European and Commonwealth titles.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Luke Greenbank<\/strong> &#8211; She led the 200 free world rankings in 2004 but intense training following the British trials had left her feeling drained and ill-prepared and optimism had turned to dread going into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omegatiming.com\/File\/00010406001F000000FFFFFFFFFFFF01.pdf\">Athens Games<\/a>\u00a0where she finished 16<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/iwd-mel-marshall-on-some-dark-days-beijing-agony-her-message-to-peaty-after-rio-glory\/\">In an article to mark International Women\u2019s Day<\/a>, Mel Marshall told Swimming World:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI just didn\u2019t feel I was ready, I felt quite frightened about it. I felt like training hadn\u2019t gone as well as I had liked it to go.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just felt overwhelmed. \" data-medium-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/melanie-marshall-2015-e1559919815339.jpg?fit=700%2C500&amp;ssl=1\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/melanie-marshall-2015-e1559919815339.jpg?fit=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" data-lazy-loaded=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-154607\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\n<\/div>\n<p>Marshall won world, European and Commonwealth medals \u2013 including six at Melbourne 2006 \u2013 before retiring following the Beijing Olympics in 2008.<\/p>\n<p>She then became head coach at the City of Derby club where a 14-year-old Peaty came along one day with his friend Kyle.<\/p>\n<p>Although Marshall was quite unimpressed with Peaty\u2019s freestyle, she immediately knew he was special when she saw his breaststroke and the wheels were set in motion.<\/p>\n<p>He made his senior international long-course debut at the 2014 Commonwealth Games where he won gold in the 100m breaststroke and with England\u2019s medley relay as well as 50m silver.<\/p>\n<p>Since then the pair have been on an odyssey that has seen Peaty become the first man to not only swim inside 58secs but also break the 57-sec barrier when he touched in 56.88 at the 2019 World Championships.<\/p>\n<p>Peaty \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/adam-peaty-and-girlfriend-eiri-munro-welcome-baby-boy\/\">who in September became a father when partner <strong>Eiri Munro<\/strong>\u00a0gave birth to\u00a0<strong>George-Anderson<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0\u2013 would have been the overwhelming favourite at Tokyo 2020 and only the second swimmer to retain the 100m title after four-time Olympic champion\u00a0<strong>Kosuke Kitajima<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Now he will have to wait until July 2021 when the rescheduled Games are due to go ahead.<\/p>\n<p>On what it takes to coach a champion, Marshall said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI think as a coach you need to be ahead of the game, five steps ahead of the athlete all the time.
