IT was almost inevitable. After Qi Hui's stunning twin victories yesterday, including a pr 1:06.14 in the 100m breast over world champion Luo Xuejuan, it was clear the 19 year-old Qi would be gunning for her own global standard in the 200 meters.

Her aim was true. Qi, the only woman ever to crack 2:20 over 200 meters short course with her old standard of 2:19.25, moved even farther ahead of the rest of the world with a 2:18.86 world record. In the process, she demolished Austria's Mirna Jukic, the European champion, by almost five seconds. Qi also holds the long course world mark.

Qi's splits:
cumulative 31.82 1:06.84 1:42.79 2:18.86
by 50s: 31.82 35.02 25.95 36.07

In today's other highlight, the USA's Jason Lezak made amends for his poor showing in the 100 meters free yesterday — he was ninth in prelims in 50.55 and failed to make finals — with a world-leading 21.40 in the 50. Argentina's Jose Meolans, the 2002 short course world champion, was a distant second in 22.03. The world record stands at 21.13 by Britain's Mark Foster.

Chinese swimmers continued to dominate the two-day meet, winning seven of today's 17 events. Yesterday they won eight of 16. Both days featured the impressive debuts of previously unknown Chinese swimmers, mainly women (or, in some cases, pre-women).

Women's Events
In the 200m breast, 12 year-old Liu Jiao was fourth in 2:27.63, just ahead of 11 year-old Liu Xiaoyu in 2:27.93. (It is not knows if the two Liu girls are sisters.) Both swims are far faster than anyone that age outside of China has swum.

Seventeen year-old Yang Yu won two today, taking the 400m free in 4:06.19 ahead of 2001 world champion Yana Klochkova of Ukraine (4:07.05) and the 200m fly in 2:08.35 in her first international outing in that event. Li Jie was second, with the USA's Rachel Komisarz third.

Zhang Shu, 17, won the 100m back in 1:00.19 with 2000 US Olympian Courtney Shealy second (1:00.64) and Spain's Nina Zhivanevskaya third (1:00.75).

China's Luo Xuejuan. the world champion, had little trouble winning the 50 breast in 31.03, with teammates Li Wei and Pang Duenyi grabbing the minor medals.

Sweden's Anna Karin Kammerling, who holds the short and long course world marks in the 50m fly, won that event in 26.07 — more than three-quarters of a second ahead of Zhou Yafei.

Martina Moravcova took the 100 IM in 1:01.10, with Britain's Alison Shepherd a strong second in 1:01.37.
The order of finish was reversed in the 100 free with
Shepherd winning in 54.07, completing her sprint double, and the Slovakian second in 54.21.

Yana Klochkova, WR-holder, Olympic and world champion, won the 400 IM in a swift 4:33.91. Second place went to Chinese twelve year-old Zhang Tianyi while Liu Jiao, also 12, was sixth in 4:48.22. Liu Xiaoyu, 11, finished in 4:50.64.

Men's Events
The Czech Republic's Svoboda Kvetoslav added the 200m free today to his triumph yesterday in the 400, though today's win was much closer, as his 1:45.61 was a bare 11-hundredths faster than Germany's Stefan Herbst.

Ouyang Kungpeng won the 50 back today to accompany his Asian record swim yesterday over 100 meters. The 20 year-old's time today was 24.38.

Britain's Steve Parry, a flyer who is becoming a latter-day backstroker, won the 200 meter dorsal race in 1:56.22, precisely 1.5 seconds ahead of Germany's Robert Kroll.

Zhang Lin, 15, led a 1-2-3 Chinese sweep of the 1500 meters with a solid 15:00.24.

Ukraine's Oleg Lisogor won the 100m breast in 59.75, well ahead of the USA's Dave Denniston. The win gave Lisogor the 50/100 breast/100 IM trifecta for the second straight World Cup meet.

Britain's James Hickman, winner of the 200m fly yesterday, took the 100 today in a hard-fought battle with Russia's Igor Marchenko, 52.20 to 52.46. Later, he came back to sweep to an easy victory in the 200 IM in 1:58.89, well clear of China's 15 year-old sensation, Wu Peng.

The World Cup now moves to Melbourne.

2002-03 FINA WORLD CUP III
Shanghai, China

25 meter pool

DAY TWO: December 2, 2002

RESULTS

MEN

50m Freestyle
1.
