LA Current rookie\u00a0Abbey Weitzeil<\/strong>, fresh off a successful career at Cal Berkeley, broke her own American record in the 50 freestyle SCM at ISL match 10 with a 23.45 to lower her own 23.79 from October 24. The swim put her third in the ISL rankings thus far this season behind only\u00a0Kasia Wasick<\/strong> and\u00a0Sarah Sjostrom<\/strong> as she won handily over Current teammate\u00a0Beryl Gastaldello\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Olivia Smoliga\u00a0<\/strong>of the Cali Condors.<\/p>\n

Weitzeil now sits ninth all-time, passing the Danish duo of\u00a0Pernille Blume\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Jeanette Ottesen<\/strong> who were tied at 23.49.<\/p>\n

Abbey Weitzeil was the first woman to break 21 seconds<\/a> in the 50 freestyle in short course yards and was expected to finish her amateur career with a bang at the 2020 NCAAs before the meet was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Weitzeil was going to be at the center of the most anticipated race of the entire meet, lining up alongside Erika Brown\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Anna Hopkin<\/strong>, who could have joined her in the sub-21 club, but swimming fans were robbed of that opportunity to see the three fastest women in yards race against each other.<\/p>\n

Weitzeil got the upperhand over Brown and Hopkin as all three are making their professional debuts with the ISL, with Weitzeil finishing ahead of Brown (24.34) and Hopkin (24.41) in this particular race in Budapest.<\/p>\n
