{"id":452731,"date":"2020-11-07T19:17:08","date_gmt":"2020-11-08T02:17:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=452731"},"modified":"2020-11-07T19:17:08","modified_gmt":"2020-11-08T02:17:08","slug":"duke-womens-swimming-diving-tie-with-virginia-tech","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/duke-womens-swimming-diving-tie-with-virginia-tech\/","title":{"rendered":"Duke Women&#8217;s Swimming &#038; Diving Tie With Virginia Tech"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Duke swimming and diving team opened the 2020-21 season against Virginia Tech Saturday afternoon at Taishoff Aquatics Pavilion.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Women: Duke 150, Virginia Tech 150<\/li>\n<li>Men: Virginia Tech 171.5, Duke. 120.5<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/results\/pdf\/2020-virginia-tech-vs-duke-ncaa-college-2020-11-07.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Results<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;This was our first meet since February and it was awesome,&#8221; associate head coach <strong>Dawn Kane<\/strong> said after the meet. &#8220;It takes a little getting used to coming off of a long break and I think they did a great job getting up and racing. We have been practicing for this. We have been training really hard. They really stepped up and raced today.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On the women&#8217;s side, Duke tied the Hokies 150-150. It was the first time in school history that the women have recorded a tie. The men last did so in 1967.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the swimming competition, the diving teams squared off on the boards. Junior diver <strong>Maddi Pullinger<\/strong> started the season strong with a sweep of both diving events. The Sydney, Australia, native posted scores of 323.33 and 324.53 in the one- and three-meter competitions, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>The Duke women started the swimming portion meet off strong, placing first and second in the opening 200 medley relay. Sophomore <a href=\"https:\/\/goduke.com\/sports\/swimming-and-diving\/roster\/emma-shuppert\/16846\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Emma Shuppert<\/strong><\/a>, freshman <strong>Sarah Foley<\/strong>, freshman <strong>Aleyna Ozkan<\/strong> and junior <strong>Shayna Hollander<\/strong> placed first with a time of 1:40.19 while freshman <strong>Emily Lenihan<\/strong>, sophomore <strong>Kayle Park<\/strong>, graduate student<strong> Mia Bullock<\/strong> and sophomore <strong>Sarah Snyder<\/strong> touched second in 1:41.44.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, Duke was led by Foley with three individual wins. She swam top-5 times in program history in each of the three events. She won the 100 breaststroke (1:01.38, fourth all-time at Duke), the 200 breaststroke (2:11.95, second all-time) and the 400 individual medley (4:13.87, fifth all-time).<\/p>\n<p>Foley led the Blue Devils to sweep the top three spots of the 100 and 200 breaststroke as she was followed by Park and freshman <strong>Catherine Belyakov<\/strong> in second and third, respectively, in both events. Park clocked a 1:02.25 in the 100 and 2:13.80 in the 200 while Belyakov touched in 1:03.30 in the 100 and 2:18.39 in the 200.<\/p>\n<p>Senior <strong>Quinn Scannell<\/strong> also sported a win for the Blue Devils as she touched first in the 200 freestyle in 1:50.26. Snyder took second in both of the freestyle sprints, the 50 and 100, with times of 23.39 and 51.53, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>The men were led by junior <strong>Cole Reznick<\/strong> and sophomore <strong>Brendan Driscoll<\/strong>. Reznick sported wins in the 100 breaststroke (55.115) and the 400 individual medley (3:59.52). In addition, the Pleasanton, Calif., native touched in 2:02.46 in the 200 breaststroke to place third.<\/p>\n<p>After missing the spring portion last season due to injury Driscoll placed first and second in the two distance freestyle events.
