That includes men\u2019s swimming.<\/p>\n<p>The university had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/william-mary-to-cut-swimming-diving-after-2020-21-season\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announced in September<\/a> that seven sports would be cut, including men\u2019s and women\u2019s swimming. The other affected sports included men\u2019s and women\u2019s gymnastics, men\u2019s indoor and outdoor track &amp; field and women\u2019s volleyball.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, citing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/citing-title-ix-pressure-william-mary-reinstates-womens-swimming\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pending Title IX litigation<\/a>, it decided to reinstate three women\u2019s sports: Women\u2019s swimming, women\u2019s volleyball and women\u2019s gymnastics. That move <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/this-is-not-what-we-asked-for-william-mary-reinstates-womens-but-not-mens-swimming\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wasn\u2019t received as well even by team members in the reinstated sports<\/a>, with the women\u2019s swimming team vowing to fight on under the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/commentary-the-loss-of-william-mary-swimming-is-a-loss-of-family\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">one family, one fight<\/a>\u201d banner. That has yielded, among other things, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CHHJefNprPA\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">$3.6 million in pledges<\/a> raised to fund the swimming team.<\/p>\n<p>It also has forced the William &amp; Mary administration to rethink its approach and the problems it was hoping to solve with the original cuts, the threat of Title IX lawsuits an indication that the changes weren\u2019t achieving those goals. Hence, Thursday\u2019s decision that all seven sports will remain through at least the 2021-22 season, allowing the school to undertake \u201ca phased approach that allows for a gender equity review paired with exploration of alternative solutions leading to a long-term financial plan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The change comes with a change in athletic directors, with <strong>Samantha Huge<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/william-mary-athletic-director-resigns-in-wake-of-protests-over-sports-cuts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">resigning last month<\/a> and <strong>Jeremy P. Martin<\/strong> installed as the interim AD. He performed a review of the decision, which led to the first reinstatements and now this large one.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Since early last month, we have been engaged in a conversation about how to structure William &amp; Mary&#8217;s Division I athletics offerings in a way that is equitable, financially sustainable and excellent,&#8221; William &amp; Mary president <strong>Katherine A. Rowe<\/strong> said <a href=\"https:\/\/tribeathletics.com\/news\/2020\/11\/5\/general-university-resets-process-to-determine-long-term-sustainability-for-w-m-athletics.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in a university release<\/a>. &#8220;I appreciate that this has been an especially painful time for the students involved in the sports cut on September 3rd to endure.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Many in our community \u2013 student-athletes, coaches, alumni, faculty and other supporters \u2013 have responded with passion, offering alternative solutions to the challenges facing the department,&#8221; said Rowe, adding she is grateful for Martin&#8217;s swift and thorough work over the past month to assess the path forward for W&amp;M Athletics. &#8220;His recommendations address the reality that the athletics community needs time to confront together forthrightly: a status quo that is unsustainable with respect both to finances and mission.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>William &amp; Mary has changed course on its reduction in varsity sports, announcing Thursday that it will reinstate seven programs that had been slated for discontinuation.
