{"id":452035,"date":"2020-11-03T09:45:47","date_gmt":"2020-11-03T16:45:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=452035"},"modified":"2020-11-03T09:45:47","modified_gmt":"2020-11-03T16:45:47","slug":"olympic-fly-medallist-steve-parry-fears-impact-of-pool-closures-speedo-backs-campaign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/olympic-fly-medallist-steve-parry-fears-impact-of-pool-closures-speedo-backs-campaign\/","title":{"rendered":"Olympic Fly Medallist Steve Parry Fears Impact Of Pool Closures; Speedo Backs Campaign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Olympic 200 fly bronze medallist <strong>Steve Parry<\/strong> has described as &#8220;quite depressing&#8221; the prospect of swimming pools being closed again in England during the upcoming national lockdown.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prime minister Boris Johnson<\/strong> said on Saturday that a four-week lockdown in England will begin in the early hours of Thursday 5 November and last until Wednesday 2 December during which time all indoor leisure facilities will be forced to close.<\/p>\n<p>It follows the sharp rise in coronavirus cases across England and means all gyms and leisure centres will be closed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/swim-england-ceo-nickerson-seeks-answers-on-pool-closures-as-second-lockdown-is-announced\/\">Swim England CEO Jane Nickerson<\/a> has questioned the reasons behind the closure given the data does not appear to support such an approach while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimming.org\/swimengland\/disappointment-leisure-closed-second-lockdown\/\">asking that swimming be redefined as essential.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Many past and present swimmers including double Olympic silver medallist<strong> Jazz Carlin<\/strong> and two-time Beijing 2008 champion <strong>Becky Adlington<\/strong> have been vocal in response while Swim England has urged people to sign an open letter to Johnson requesting the pools remain open.<\/p>\n<div class=\"oembed-wrap\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I\u2019ve found it quite hard to put into words how gutted I am that pools\/leisure facilities are being closed..<\/p>\n<p>We need exercise to be essential. They are vital to nation\u2019s physical and mental health in battle against Covid-19, please <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/SaveOurSports?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#SaveOurSports<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/OpenOurPools?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#OpenOurPools<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/x2eTOut1tv\">https:\/\/t.co\/x2eTOut1tv<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Becky Adlington (@BeckAdlington) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BeckAdlington\/status\/1323256011025731586?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 2, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Parry &#8211; who was third at the Games in Athens in 2004 &#8211; fears more pools will be lost as a result of the lockdown and argues people swimming in Covid-secure environments is key to maintaining the physical and mental health of the nation \u2013 something he believes should be a priority in the current climate.<\/p>\n<p>He said in an interview with\u00a0<a title=\"BBC Breakfast News Twitter feed\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BBCBreakfast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BBC Breakfast News<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe whole thing around grassroots sport is quite stark and quite depressing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust to shut down all activity, especially at grassroots level again, will definitely have some impact.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Swimming in particular, we are going to lose so many community facilities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not an easy thing to shut down and start back up again.\u00a0We\u2019ve already had a number of pools that chose to stay closed after those first four months and I fear every time we go into lockdown, we are going to end up with facilities just disappearing forever.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hear all the time the Government saying we have to follow the science and I never understood the first time around why gyms and swimming pools were at the back of the queue when opening back up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe incidence of infections we have seen through ukactive studies and Sport England have shown that there are less than three infections per 100,000 people that visit gyms and leisure centres.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s take swimming in particular. People are turning up beach ready, having limited interactions in a Covid-secure environment and then swimming in chlorine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that chlorine reduces the chance of infections being transmitted. People want to be safe and being in a chlorinated pool is one of the safest environments you can be in.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_421888\" style=\"width: 263px\" throw everything out when it comes to doing activities that are safe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Government talks about us being healthy and that\u2019s absolutely the right message but we\u2019re also going to struggle with coronavirus and other health conditions if we don\u2019t prioritise being active and being healthy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe also need to think about what happens in six months and a year from now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough the next month is really important and we have to get the R rate down, I\u2019m also asking questions around what our activity levels and the health of the nation looks like six months from now?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just get frustrated when I see swimming and other sports at the back of the queue when the evidence suggests that they are is also supporting the #OpenOurPools campaign ahead of the vote on the second lockdown in the <strong>House of Commons<\/strong> before it comes into force in the early hours of Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesman said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSpeedo UK wholeheartedly supports the #OpenOurPools campaign and is urging the UK Government to please consider the physical and mental wellbeing of the swimming community when debating this issue.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u201cWhilst we applaud the continued efforts to try and prevent the spread of Covid-19, we believe that venues have adapted superbly since being allowed to initially re-open.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u201cSwimming is vital to\u00a0the health and wellbeing of millions of adults in Britain and can help to reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression in what are undoubtedly tough times.
